The bed was the worst bed ever. You could hear each moment on the bed. You lifted your leg to get comfortable and it would make loud noises. You could see bright light from hallway as well. The toilet was too close to the wall as well. Kitchen and location were really good. You could tell the kitchen was clean and up to date. Please update the beds!!!Also want to point out the heaters settings couldn't be changed. So you either boiled or cold

Absolutely loved our stay! Beautiful area right by the Truman Track. The houses are basically part of the native 'jungle'! Be prepared for sandflies, though..We stayed with the whole family for 6 nights and didn't get bored of the Punakaiki area at all!The service was awesome, the whole family felt very welcome. The house (Ruru) we stayed in could use a bit of a renovation and more vacuum cleaning but that didn't really bother us.We definitely go back to Te Nikau Retreat when we are in the area again.

A little gem in the rain forest. Tui Lodge sleeps 2-3. No tv but has wi-fi. Great for getting away from it all. A short walk through rain forest to a beach. Take snaps of waves crashing on rocks near pancake rocks. All good for the soul.

The hostel is OK but nothing more.Pro's - it's clean, not to expensive, location is quite central.Con's - it's not charming, the rooms have no windows and there is very little space

more of a hotel rather than hostel vibe. beds were nice, little cubby next to bed with an outlet, light, and small shelf space. the lockers were fine, room for one bag and only room for a small/flexible lock, mine didn’t fit. many of the laundry machines were out of order. the wifi was really good. pretty far from downtown, 25min walk or so. got pretty stuffy in the room, but if opened the door it was often loud outside.

Fantastic! Really clean, nice furniture. Bed mattresses are thick and comfy (much nicer than other backpacking stays), two thick pillows provided instead of one awful one, people at reception are incredibly nice and will go above and beyond to help you or answer questions.

Upon arrival I was able to put my bags in a locked room as I was a little early for check in. It was rather warm on comparison to where I came from so I wanted to get changed into some shorts. Instead of telling me that I could use the facilities to do so the guy on reception watched as I got changed from my jeans to shorts in public. Now I'm not shy but I can imagine for others stood in public in your underwear as the staff stand and watch you could be rather uncomfortable.Later when I checked into the doorm I was hit with a wall of warm, stale, musky air as the room was very warm and smelt so bad. When I later asked if there was anyway I could change rooms the reception staff smirked and said all were the same. I asked if any had any ventilation at all and again they smirked and said they didn't and that they only have heating and the best they could do was get me to pay extra and book a private room if I wanted to have a fan. There is a pool table but the one que they have is broken. There is a TV room but the TV doesn't work. The beds are really uncomfortable and have left me with a sore back.I can't say I would be staying again or recommending anyone else to.

Very nice place. It is quiet and very clean. We stied in a private room with en-suite bathroom. The room was (as expected) on the small side but with a nice view of the city. The bathroom was quite large. The common dining area and kitchen has everything you would need to cook and store food. I would recommend this place over budget hotel.

Pros: AMAZING location! Staff are super friendly and helpful! The balcony is stunning!Cons: The room I was in was tiny and crammed full of people and girls had their stuff all over the floor cause their was very limited storage. Also I have stayed in 100s of hostels around the world and never stayed somewhere that didn't have any way of locking your stuff up. The girls in my room seemed nice but every time I came back to my room the door was wide open with no one in it and none of our stuff was locked. I felt constant anxiety about my stuff being stolen so I carried around all my expensive things with me my entire stay. Also their is no privacy curtains so it feels like a summer camp.I don't think I would recommend this place to any solo travelers like myself but if you are in a group it would be perfect!

Modern and very well located, with friendly staff and nice facilities (lots of common spaces). The 4-person dorm I was in was a bit tight on space though. A bit more pricey than other hostels but worth the price. I’d stay again.
