The Marion Hostel
I can say it again and again - best hostel I ever stayed. If you looking for the place to feel like home this is your hostel. I arrived after 33hours of traveling from Nepal with big food poisoning at like 9am in the morning. I knew the check in is starting from 2pm but thanks to the Gui (the boy working at the reception) he was very lovely and very understanding. He showed me around the kitchen facilities and other important rooms around the hostel - offered me to make a tea and even offered to have some pancakes as that morning hostel guests had a free fresh just cooked pancakes for everyone! that was so lovely even knowing that I haven't done my check in yet- it felt like Gui really cared about my wellbeing so thank you so much for this! Gui even said if the bed in the dorms will be available anytime from 11am onwards he will let me to the room as I was feeling very sick. The next morning I overslept my alarm and woke up only 30mins before my flight departs so after rushing to get an Uber I lost my favourite beanie somewhere between the room and the Uber! so I called to Marion hostel and they advised me that they found it and that they will send it to my address here in Queenstown! so here I am sitting with my beanie writing this review and feeling so grateful for such a good hospitality. Like always years and years to come Marion is never disappoints with hospitality and care. thank you. and see you next time!

Eco Lodge Pakowhai
The good: the location is perfect. If you are backpacking in the country and you want to work in Hastings, this hostel is very well located. Not far from orchards, not far from the city. And John could help you with finding a job.The bad: despite the good location, and the access to jobs in the area, is the most dirty place I've been. Your $170 in average per week pays the bed, but don't expect to have clean facilities even tho there's a reminder everywhere that you need to clean your dishes. There's one person coming once a week to the cleaning and she doesn't have enough time to finish in that day.Showers are full of mould, bad smells, dirty old paint on the walls, mud around the whole place. But because it's a workers hostel, you might find nice people where you will make new friends for sure.

7am construction directly outside my window. They’re constructing a new building next door. Told staff not to use this room anymore but noise is loud enough to hear throughout the building and outside. Do not recommend staying here.

Point Break Backpackers & Cafe
An unexpected surprise. Great coffee, friendly service, excellent burger, crisp tasty fries cooked in new oil and all for a very good bargain price. Typical pleasant seaside retro 70s decor and all nice and clean toilets too. A little winner in New Brighton

Spa Lodge
One of the most terrible places I've ever stayed!!Find my TA review and the owner's response....Yes, I was a submariner, for 10 years. No, I don't hire towels, especially from places of very questionable cleanliness. I carry my own clean towel, just in case I come across a place like this. The shaking of the windows and BED definitely WAS worse than when I lived next to a railway line! I get paid well; I chose budget accommodation in order to use the rest of my allowance to shout the guests to dinner and a birthday cake. And I absolutely LOVE my job! I didn't pee on the floor; I was sitting down, you moron. See the photo for the ACTUAL sign on the toilet wall....

Love this place - great value for money, super chill vibe. And, when I was solo travelling over Christmas, the owners gave me an awesome plate of Christmas food - special thanks to Barbara! :)
