Had a fantastic trip here over the weekend, didn't see too much wildlife but we did get an immensely enjoyable and prolonged sighting of an old black labrador. Didn't know they were a protected species here in New Zealand, big move from the DOC, overall major win.

Magically wildly place.Pity people take vehicles and dogs there when here are signs everywhere advising this is prohibited.Do the right thing and enjoy it raw.

What a strange, isolated, windswept bird land! Great for collecting shells and spotting birdies; a bit wild and barren and today there was a lot of red weed stuff in the water. On a different day it could be good for swimming, and depending on the tide you might be able to paddle board on the non beach side. Great for a walk and explore, but take a windbreaker.

Not a great choice for casual pedestrians. But would be wonderful for birding!

Waipu River Mouth Wildlife Refuge
Went here to check out the birds and was not disappointed. 30+ species ID'd and it was the off season. It's possible to look from the carpark, but more habitat can be observed by a 5 minute walk in either direction. Be prepared to get your feet wet and muddy.

Waipu River Mouth Wildlife Refuge
A very peaceful and tranquil haven. Lots of wild birds, great walks with fantastic views. At low tide, walk across the estuary to the sand dunes and onto an amazing, deserted beach. Gorgeous!
