Timber Trail
We started off with a shuttle service from Camp Epic (apologies we were late who would of thought we would get fogged in, held up by road works heading into Ongarue, then on the final 1 way bridge we gave way to a huge truck with forestry machinery - then Paul rang to check on us) we met a great bunch of adventure seekers, stayed at Camp Epic which was fantastic, we also got to chat with Bill Holloway (No.1 track extraordinaire track maker) on his Kubota tractor on the 2nd day. This would have to be New Zealand's top mountain bike trail ride that caters to all fitness levels (we did it on ebikes - thankfully) the scenery is breath taking, the constant chatter of bird life was exceptional, the trails are maintained up to a high level and in top condition. To learn about the timber pioneers, their families & machinery through to the tramways that bought the timber out, the suspension bridges are a marvel to behold especially when you look down and see the remnants of the timber bridges that held trams with logs what clever clever people. The work that has gone into these trails is exceptional with a story to be told all through the ride which gives a deep appreciation of the hard yakka of the timber workers, what a tough life! We came away in awe of those that have created a visionary story that we could enjoy - a simple 'thankyou' does not seem to suffice but THANKYOU!

West Coast Riders Club MTB Trails
Awesome trails out there, was well maintained when I went out there in March. No fees! Shuttles are run by the club for $40 first day ($20 membership fee) and then $20 each day after once a member. Great day out

Motu Trails - Dunes Trail, Motu Road, Pakihi Track, Rere Falls Trail
The Motu Trails: Dunes Trail is a wide, packed-gravel trail great for cycling, walking or running (there is quite a bit of traffic with people cycling so please be courteous). The leisurely and pleasant Dunes Trail takes in coastal scenery (Pacific Ocean coastline) with opportunities for seaside picnics and swimming. You can even hire bikes if you do not have one of your own. It is perfectly marked so you cant go wrong. This is A MUST if you find yourself in Opotiki.

Old Coach Road Bike Trail
Had lots of beautiful scenery and was worth the ride- best ridden on e- bikes to power over the extreme terrains in areas. Needs some tender loving care because it is getting quite damaged by weather. Some tricky steep parts as well but otherwise a scenic ride.

Welcome Rock - Meet the High Country
Absolutely an amazing opportunity and stunning views! We stayed at the mud hut, definitely an authentic experience, which we loved. Having the outdoor bath was an absolute highlight. Highly recommend adding this track to your to-do list. Thanks for having us! Already planing to come back to stay in the slate hut next -watch this space!

Jacksons Retreat Alpine Holiday Park
Had an awful experience here recently - Initially we were put onto an empty area down by the playground only to find out once we had put up our tents that there was raw sewage leaking at our feet...The owner tried to move us approx 10m to the side which we declined as who wants to be anywhere near sewage?!He attempted to move us further and further away - even outside the campground gates at one point! We eventually just picked a spot and told him that's where we were staying.New years eve night at 10:30pm the owners decided it would be a great idea to let off fireworks in a DOG FRIENDLY campground... Yes you read that right... It absolutely terrified our dog and others around... Not to mention the camp is right in the middle of native forest with kiwis and other native animals inside it! We approached the owners who took it all as a joke and offered to cuddle our dog..Absolutely disgusted in the lack of service we received at this place and will not be going back.We had booked three sites and only used one but are still awaiting our refund which we were promised too...Even one star is generous in my mind..

Herbert Forest MTB Tracks
The only segment of mature indigenous native forest left in North Otago. Totara, Rimu, Matai, Miro trees aged in the hundreds of years, while some upwards of 1,000 years. Also saw the native birds like the fan tail and kereru (New Zealand pigeon). Someone had the foresight to save them from destruction - they were going to be on the chopping block.
