Waipu Caves are an absolute recommendation if you want to spend endless time in a glow worm cave, without any pressure, without guides etc.Don't pay attention to the sign at the entrance which says 2km / 2,5h to walk - once you reach the parking area it's a walk of 2-3 min. till you reach the entrance of the cave. I would recommend you to bring a headlamp, watershoes or barefoot (no rubber boots - that won't be enough), shorts and a good torch extra will help as well. From the entrance to the first worms it's just a few meters. At the end of the cave" turn left and head to the next chamber

Well worth a visit. Bring a change of clothes and be prepared to get your feet wet. There is a lot to explore with a number of looping back tunnels to check out if you are feeling adventurous. Suitable for families. The caves can be slippery so caution for those who are unsteady on their feet.

Fantastic experience going into the cave. Really muddy floors so the best place to walk is in the stream. Bring a flashlight and a camera that allows for long exposure times. Glow worms to the left and eels to the right.

Waipu caves is one of the most magical places on the north. It has a wonderful glowworm cave and also a hike up a hill that is full of rocks that you can climb. Freedom camping at it's best!Check the photos I managed to capture, they are surreal

Great caves! Open year round, expect water in the cave even on dry days. Below ankle length in warm dec weather. Torches off for a moment to enjoy the glow worms! :)There is also a walk along the bush next to the cave for those who don't want to be in the cave / a place to wait. Free parking & loos also

My favorite place in New Zealand so far! You'll get to explore the caves on your own and see lots of glowworms and unlike waitomo caves you don't have to pay anything. The glowworms were so strong that I could take pictures of them just with my phone.Make sure to bring a torch and shoes with which you can walk in water because you will get wet!Plan lots of time for your trip here to be able to enjoy it!

Awesome place! Need a head lamp and some decent footwear if you want to go deeper into the caves. Waist height water I you go further down the caves which I definitely would recommend, just try not to get lost

A great little spot to check out glowworms and for free. Running water in the base of the cave ensures your feet get wet!Public toilets onsite and possible to camp overnight.
