In our most recent stay we got a free upgrade to the Tree Lodge, which was a nice surprise. The rooms are clean, modern and aesthetic. Location-wise it's right near all the eateries and activities. It's our go-to everytime we are in Franz Josef.

Stayed for two nights in a deluxe retreat. Very spacious and comfortable with good level of amenities. Very quiet for a good nights sleep. Good and hot shower. A reasonable selection in the breakfast basket too. The lodges are well located to provide privacy

Great location within easy walking distance of main street. Great pub attached to retreat but food isn't served late (past 8-8.30pm). We checked in late and easily found our room. No milk for hot drinks in the room but all usual teas, coffee machine with premixed milk.

Rooms were clean, staff were excellent. The rooms could use a bit of upgrading, but they were good for a few nights.Location is walking distance to everything.Overall good value for money.

There is a variety of accommodation choices here so I am only going on my room. Room was good and had everything I needed but would be a good idea to put some towel rails up for towels to dry and maybe some hooks to hang coats on. A blind in the bathroom might be a good idea as well. Restaurant and bar there are great, food yum, hot tub looked good, but was full of people. Reception seemed to have limited times.Good location walking distance around the place. All in all good for stop over.

Good:- Excellent location. Walking distance to main attractions like Wildlife Park, main street, supermarket.- Reception staffs were friendly and accommodating.- Room itself is unique. Waking up to trees in front of the windows.- Very good breakfast with bread and various spreads, muffin, cereal, milk, orange juice, fruits delivered to the room every day. (It was too much for us and we requested to reduce it.)Can be improved:- Main problem for us was the shower area without a door. The water splashed all over the toilet, making it so wet. As it was winter, it made the floor very cold. We had to request for more bathroom mats to dry it. After a long day of hiking, we wanted to have a nice shower but in the end, showering was quite tedious. After reading other comments, we realized that the room was for wheelchair friendly which is probably why there is no shower door. The motel should have informed their guests in advance and let them decide if it is okay or change room with a shower door.- The cooking pots were extremely greasy no matter how many times we washed. Probably previous guests burned it while cooking. Time to change the pots.- Bed was too soft for our liking.- While it was nice to wake up to trees, some windows do not have curtains so natural light came into the room when day was bright. For those who are not early birds, this will be an issue.

The accommodations seem to blend in with the environment in such a way that you feel a part of the whole NZ nature experience. What’s even better than the comfortable and contemporary room is the exquisite friendliness of the staff and everyone in Franz Joseph as a whole. It’s quiet here, and the stillness-by-the-ocean gives a spiritual tranquility that gives me a warm feeling every time I drive through.

Rooms were clean and modern with the rustic rainforest feel! The private hot tubs were great! Service was great as well as they personally try to help with my car issue even after I have checked out but still parked at the place.

Was recommended to stay here by some fellow campers I met two evenings before, and boy, were they right! The place was adequately staffed, and most sites are near to the amenities, which were fantastic by the way. Great shower, sizeable kitchen with dishwashing liquid and tea towels, and a lounging area with couches and roaring fire. Four Square supermarket, where everything in Franz Josef Village is centered around, is also a short walk away.Took a chance and stayed at the holiday park next door the following night and that was the biggest mistake I made my entire trip in NZ - you probably can't get anywhere else better in Franz Josef than Rainforest Retreat.

Lovely accommodation - the spa on the deck was well worth it - a magical feeling to sit there listening to sounds of the bush. Everything was well maintained & super clean. Appreciate the challenges of getting food to such a remote location & the issues Covid has caused w staffing etc but breakfast could be better & it would be nice to have some healthier options for dinner.
