Hay Scenic Reserve Reserve Walk
Follow the Akaroa Highway to Hilltop, then along the Summit Road to the Pigeon Bay turnoff. The reserve is adjacent to the road, 5 km from the turnoff, on the right just past Wilson's road.Head clockwise around this scenic loop track through one of the best remaining stands of lowland podocarp forest on the peninsula. Large mataī, kahikatea, tōtara, and miro mix with exotics in this small reserve. The easy grade makes this walk suitable for small children and family groups. It is estimated the kahikitea trees are between 200 - 300 years old, matai trees over 400 years old and the totara - and especially the large split trunk totara could be between 800 - 1000 years old.
