We were prompted to visit this Museum and Visitor Information Centre by a review which raved about their 15 minute film. We enjoyed it, but not at an 8.6 on IMDb level*!However Oscar-winning isn’t this short movie’s objective. Rather it’s to provide a succinct and easy to absorb overview of the early local history. Then when you view the many individual exhibits they’re that much more meaningful. The welcome we received from Brent and the information he provided were excellent - ask him for anecdotes about Hillary if he’s there when you are!So it’s well worth the modest ticket price of NZ$9 per adult. This includes entry and introduction movie. $5 for introduction movie only. Kids 14 and under go free.*Note: IMDb is a film review and ratings service and nothing to do with sound volume! A film which gets 8.6 on IMDb is truly outstanding.

Really great experience to visit this little Southland museum. Interesting stories about history of the region, nice welcome movie, friendly staff. Entrance fee $9 per Adult is ok, worth to spend there around 2 hours to read thru all the information panels or enjoy the place. Be aware of motion detector for lights/power so if you got stuck with one exhibition, you'll need to make some move to start power again :)

The most amazing museum in New Zealand, we spent a lot of time with the kids and the gemstone area. Which is really targeted to any young person or young at heart or anyone that's interested in New Zealand precious stones. Aswell I I loved the interactive video at the beginning, I felt like I had gone back in time to be fair and created a great story for me to teach my children about the history of New Zealand as this is one of the earliest settlements in terms of Europeans to New Zealand. It is a must if you go to Southland
