Scenic Hotel Punakaiki

We had a lovely Christmas at The Ocean View Retreat. We’re two families (8 people) and our initial reservation was a bit messed up and Leonard worked diligently to get us all together. We also loved the swimming near by that the staff recommended, Pancake rocks (of course) and Punakaiki cavern. Christmas dinner was perfect, thanks for everything Ocean View!

Stopped in for lunch and my partner and I really enjoyed it. Beautiful location and reasonably priced for pretty nice food, we had the fish and beef burger. Honest food cooked nicely. Decided to come back for dinner and unfortunately experience was quite different. Chicken was cooked fine but almost tasteless, and the “broccolini” that was supposed to be on that dish was just broccoli with probably the thickest stalk I’ve ever seen. Venison was also a bit over cooked, and truffle risotto on that dish didn’t taste like it had any truffle in it at all. Both dishes were far smaller than those we got for lunch yet were much more expensive. Would come back for lunch any day, but give the dinner a miss.

Nice big room. Comfy bed, great showers, great location. Beautiful relaxing views of the ocean. Excellent spot to witness one of the most magnificent sunsets. Dinner was very good too at the hotel’s restaurant.

Lovely position right on the beach. Waking up to hearing the wave was a highlight. Very friendly and welcoming staff, we had a lovely evening meal in the restaurant, breakfast was lovely and a great view.Perfect place to stop over to see pancake rocks and rest along west coast.

We had a lovely stay recently. Very calming over there, just switch off from the busy world - relax, watch the ocean, listen to the sound of waves and walk around Punakaiki. Alexander is a nice friendly host and the food in the restaurant was excellent. Highly recommended.

Very good experience, the atmosphere is nice and the food was delicious. The only drawback, no air con in our room, and it was too hot inside but could not open the windows due to mosquitoes

After a long day of traveling, we were happy to find this restaurant open at a later hour. Nice wine choices and a variety of fine-dining entrees to choose from. Lovely space - quiet and spaced out from other diners.

We went to stay here with a group of 50 people. The accommodation is good but the food is not up to the high price you pay for it. Fish and chips for $35!!We had a buffet dinner on the Saturday night. The soup was ok. The main meal vegetables were probably warmed up from frozen as the green beans were all soggy and it had baby carrots and peas mix. The potatoes were all symmetrical in size and shape, probably came out of a packet. The lamb, fish and chicken dishes were average and unlikely made from fresh ingredients.Desert was tinned fruit, packet meringue, cream and slab chocolate cake cut up into small squares.All of this came at the handsome price of $79 a head. Very disappointing for the money. I think quite a few of us had a shock at the price on checking out.
