The Flying Fox, Retreat Accommodation on the Whanganui River

My partner and i booked a canoe package in tui - the tiny house - we had a perfect stay - i must mention that i was impressed at how imaculately clean the place is for an eco sanctury - not a spider in sight indoors - that's impressive! , we didn't get to do the canoe trip because of the weather so we did the river road by car instead , We had a bit of catering in our package too breakfast and a packed lunch - we were so impressed with all the food , it was so fresh and tasted beautiful because they grow everything themselves including making the jams for breakfast and the portion size is humungous , so worth spending the little extra money to get that service - was a lovley treat, Such amazing host's were really friendly welcoming and had some great advice on hotspots to visit along the river , they have some very interesting and entertaining photo's , really made us feel welcome and we didn't want to leave.... i managed to capture a picture of a deer grazing from the kitchen window of our accomodations , it was such an amazing special place , we will be back for sure.

Such a lovely place. Super warm welcome. Gorgeous rooms / chalets gardens ducks and mungo the cat.We were on a bike trip and Jane and Kelly made sure we were well rested and feed !Go there you will love it

WOW, a wonderful amazing unique stay. I surprised my partner with the canoe package, it was absolutely perfect gift for his birthday. Kelly and Jane are excellent hosts, who made our stay an awesome experience. Great hospitality, delicious food and wonderful sleeps in the Gypsy Cart. Plus the canoeing down the Whanganui River was relaxing, enjoyable and it was wonderful to see the river and the surrounding land at a leisurely pace. We are looking forward to our next stay.

Myself and my girlfriend booked accomodation and shared a lovely night together. The next morning we got ready and preceded to spend approximately an hour or so making sure everything was clean and how we found it.We were then left a review stating how poorly we had left the premises despite making the bed, doing the dishes and general tidying of the room. We have never been to an accomodation where they expect so much of you. Maybe I should have been warned by the note on the bench saying they’ll charge you extra for dirty dishes.Be prepared to add professional cleaner in your next job interview. As people who work in industry’s with very high standards ( dairy farming & military ) it is insulting to suggest that we would leave someone’s place in a very poor state.I took my work van down their driveway which is quite steep to park up. There was a sign stating no campervans. Ordinary work vans are far from being campervans. We ended up getting stuck on the drive way and had to reverse back down. I had to swallow my pride and embarrassingly ask for help if I could get towed up. 1 of the owners happily helped us up and we were very grateful, he was just as surprised as us that we couldn’t get up. Only a couple hours later we were left a terrible review saying how it’s all my fault. Despite them saying if we got stuck it was no drama and they could tow us out.Good to know, next time we’ll just wait, sit on the ground twiddling our thumbs and we’ll call the only people we know several hours away to give us a tow. Cheers guys.This was our first weekend away in a while leading busy lives and feel very disappointed as we were paying money to go somewhere to relax and unwind.We were planning personally to purchase for family members and friends to stay here. We no longer will be.As someone who leases accomodation myself I understand what general wear and tear is and how it feels having people stay in your pride & joy.Left a bitter taste and a disappointing end to the weekend.

Was an excellent getaway experience for our family. The canoeing was terrific and complimented the incredible feeling of isolation from the busy world. Accommodation was rustic but very comfortable. We really enjoyed playing the vinyl records on the player in our cabin lounge.

Had a lovely time staying in the Treetops Studio - it's super cozy, warm, just the right amount of amenities while keeping a rustic and 'away from it all' feel. Jane and Kelly were such kind and engaging hosts - and even left us fresh baking at the door on our second day! Perfect for an easy weekend away from Whanganui, there's more than enough on the property to satisfy a few days of lazy wandering about. Thanks, will be back!

We were looking for somewhere a bit different to stay on our holiday and we definitely found it at The Flying Fox Retreat, what a treat! We went for a package deal which made our stay such a breeze! This included our accommodation in the Riverboat Cottage with the Bridge to Nowhere Jet package for two people with canoe. A trip we also highly recommend :) Jane & Kelly were lovely hosts and Jane made us a delicious packed lunch for our day on the river. We loved the unique accommodation which was beautifully presented, peaceful, had everything we needed plus more and was very comfortable. We loved going through the huge stack of records they had available and quietly playing some lovely jazz music while relaxing in the evening. Going across the river in the cable car just made the stay even more special. Thank-you Jane & Kelly! Our stay at The Flying Fox Retreat and the Bridge to Nowhere trip was the highlight of our two week holiday in the North Island :)

Wow! After canoeing the river, and riding the Timber Trail we needed something nice :) The Flying Fox delivered that. Jane and Kelly run the perfect operation, both passionate about what the do, and more than happy to engage and share their knowledge of the local area.Seriously, this place is a gem, it's remote and the trip over in the Flying fox is just crazy cool.We ended up staying another night, it was that good :) Can't wait to come back.

My husband and I came to stay In December for our wedding anniversary.We made our booking the week we wanted to come and wanted to do the paddling on the riverf option. We wanted our stay to be hassle free so went for the catered meals.We both enjoyed our stay. The facilities were amazing and it was very restful. Andrew was particularly impressed by the stereo in our cottage - apparently it was a good quality one.Paddling on the river was interesting - we had to work together to get back to the flying fox and we did it!The meals were delicious and the serving sizes were generous. Our hosts were friendly and i would recommend going here if you want to get away from it all.

Really cute. The owners were super hospitable, friendly and kept a qiaimt property.Kindly showed us around the orchards + property. Whole thing was really relaxing - enjoying the experience.The Flying Fox is a nice touch, too.
