Great place to visit by boat, TeMahia is boat friendly however the Portage is run down and not boat friendly.

Stayed privately for 3 nights. Glorious weather and the water like glass. Keneperu Sound is shallower than Queen Charlotte Sound and therefor warmer water for swimming. Lots of birdlife in Bush - Tui and Kereru particularly.Road access is limited due to recent floods and damage. Keneperu Road road closed" except for residents and Bach owners."

Kenepuru is akin to a salt water lake sheltered by hills, with only a narrow, protected exit, and so is calmer than other sounds, the reason it is so popular for kayaking, hanging out and also living. Getting around by boat is far less rough than the open sea...
