Perfect place!One of the very best hostels in NZ so far.Great attention to details, clean, spacious kitchen with plenty of room in fridges.The host Rory is a gem!Must visit!

Unfriendly and pretty rude. A friend was staying as a guest and I was just having a chat and drink with her for an hour or so. Next minute the owner rocks up all bolshy and starts ordering me to leave after I clean the glass I'm using and describing me as a freeloader. At the same time he paused to say us freeloaders were costing his industry. No dick. Most of you are fine. It's bad hospitality that's costing the industry. And it's only costing you because you are at the bottom of the barrel, rude and never there with only one poorly trained part timer to help. And she thought the same as us about you. On yer bike mate. Get out of the business.

Best hostel ever, where you actually feel like home. For the first time we arrived in a clean, comfy and actually pretty place. Rory, the owner, was the sweetest on earth. They also have a very pretty garden, very well cared for. Go for it !

Tamara Backpackers Lodge - BBH
This place is really nice. The receptionist (Heather, I believe that's her name) was very friendly and helpful. We booked a small double room but she upgraded it to a large double room at no extra cost, when we arrived there. The room is spacious and the bed is very comfortable. We just stayed there for one night and we loved it. Whenever we get a chance, we will definitely stay there. I would recommend Tamara Riverside Lodge as it's good value for money too.

In my entire 2 months in New Zealand, this was the best place to stay at by far. The people are very friendly, the house and the area is absolutely beautiful. They have a piano, a guitar and a TV with lots of movies in their lounge. The rooms are always very clean. And there's free coffee, tea and other things in the kitchen. You can get really good advice on what to do here at the reception too.This place also has a different atmosphere than other backpackers, it feels more like home.I definitely recommend checking this place out, you won't regret it.

Tamara Backpackers Lodge - BBH
Stayed 2 nights. It was great. Very clean and well organised, the staff and owners are both delightful and really helpful. I’m not used to shared kitchen setups, but the way their kitchen was laid out made it easy.We stayed in an upstairs roow with an en-suite. It was small with a nice view over the garden.The whole feel of the place was really relaxed. I put this down to the excellent staff.Convenient walk into city center for cafes and restaurants.We borrowed bikes and took the long bike path down to the coast and around to castle cliff.We would definitely stay here again.

Warm, friendly, down to earth, clean, helpful. I loved my stay.Great character: Spud the dog, the chickens and all the roses in bloom were the perfect addition to an already wonderful space.Edit: revisit to Tamara Lodge a year or so later and all the charm, hospitality, cosyness and feeling of home is as delightful as I remember.Thank you.I also recommend also booking direct with Tamara Lodge.

It has lovely views of the waterfront and very high ceilings that make the communal rooms very light, bright and airy. Street parking is available and so is limited site parking. The need were comfy but the room was a little cramped with 2 beds, chairs and bedside tables.

Such an amazing lodge. Quite clean room, kitchen and bathrooms. Plus, located along the river, creating nice and relaxed atmosphere. There’s also an organ and the classic guitar, could enjoy the playing with them while staying.I appreciated their friendliness, and recommendations for hanging around this city. It was raining when I checked out, but the staff gave me a lift to the bus station. Thanks Rory for that!There’s not many backpackers or lodges which are well organized. Tamara Lodge was different to others. Highly recommend, even a little bit far away from the bus station. It is worth to stay.
