The Mad Butcher

I went shopping here to buy meat for my dog. The young people serving had difficulty understanding my request for tripe, offal and lungs. A butcher shop should have all that but this one didn't. Apparently, my request was unusual. The only pet food they had on offer was minced chicken carcasses. I asked them to make me a special order of minced offal-- hearts, liver and kidneys but this was too much trouble for this MAD BUTCHER. I bought a selection and took it home where I chopped it up by hand before freezing it in smaller bags.

Since their latest management change, they have a much better selection, variety, prices, a cleaner shop and a lot of the same friendly staff that were there before.

Not good they have got my order wrong more than once. When asked about it they act dumb. They have also left things out and haven't told me or offered something else to replace it but still charge me full price. So yeah not good.

This Mad Butcher discount franchise in Upper Hutt has some great deals for fresh and frozen meats. I brought a whole butterflied marinated chicken for $8 in a butter sauce and 1.5kg of NZ beef mince both much cheaper than the three local supermarkets.

I had called them to check if the butcher can cut the whole chicken into medium curry pieces. They have done this in the past for me plenty of times. They said checked with the butcher and the reply was “ we haven’t cut the chicken after we changed to the new management ?? What does that mean?? So you guys will do it or no?? You should just tell to the customers that we don’t do this service anymore a straight answer. I am very disappointed with this store and won’t visit in future. I will rather go to Kiwi Halal in Lower Hutt and get my meats sorted. The lady was very friendly over the phone but doesn’t solve the problem. I think the new management needs to be more flexible for their customers, I am pretty sure Mad Butcher Lower Hutt are still providing this service

Last week when I went to the store and requested to cut chicken, the staff did so. Today it was a different person who refused to do so. So I asked the receptionist whether this service is dependant on the mood of the person who cuts, he said he thinks so. Staff are allowed to make decisions as they please and no management to set policy?

Awesome place for meat shopping. Reasonable price, friendly staff. Small surcharge for the use of credit cards, zip/afterpay, yep they do zip & afterpay as well but worth paying the surcharge. Highly recommend.
