Wairua Falls
These falls are best visited after heavy rain, when flowing a lot stronger. It is a bit out of the way, and unfortunately the car park and area have not been looked after - there needs to be a walkway down to the bottom of the falls (I see from other reviews, some people have gotten down - but no official path). Currently you can only get photos from up the top, and it is was a bit overgrown when I visited. If in the area, worth the detour, but only worth the trip from Auckland if after heavy rain.

Wairua Falls is located on the Wairua River, a 30 minutes' drive away from Whangarei. Usually, it's a waterfall almost without water, but in a rainy season, it looks absolutely unbelievable.

Hugely disappointing. I have seen more impressive storm water drains. Didn't even bother taking a photo after a 2 hour drive to get there. Would not go back unless there was heavy rain prior to going and I was in the area to begin with.

If you like secret hideaways, this is the place for you. A beautiful swimming hole with plenty of picnic space, just a short walk from the parking lot. Bring a swim ring too for floating down the river. This is relatively quiet, so no toilet available yet.And look out for the rainbows that happen over the waterfall!

Go down an unsealed road Wairoa Falls Rd for 2km and at the end are the falls. Just view from the carpark, no walks. Falls were running well after a bit of rain.

Worth stopping in, can get huge after a storm, bit polluted with run off these days, can't swim there like you used to. Need more tracks around the area. If your passing through there's a picnic area to have something to eat. Worth stopping in but with a bit of work could be so much better

Wairua Falls
We had no idea this waterfall was here and it is quite a powerful one too. It is few minutes drive off state highway 15 and if driving by worth a few minutes to appreciate it. The night before our visit there was quite heavy rainfall so the water colour is mixed.
