We have ski’d around the world and this is definitely the friendliest best service we have ever received. DO NOT use any other website or information services about anything ski / travel related to whakapapa- just go straight to these guys and they’ll help you out. Amazing!!

If we are going to Whakapapa, we normally come to Ski Biz for gear rental. They are usually open later on Fridays and Saturdays for late-night gear pick-up. They are usually open early too so you are able to pick up gear before driving up the mountain. They hire both skis and snowboards and are generally cheaper than hiring on the mountain. They also hire mountaineering gear for those that enjoy walking up mountings both for the summer and winter seasons. The building is usually the first thing you see when you enter National Park so it's fairly easy to determine if they are open or closed based on the presence or absence of lights. The car park is decently sized. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. They also have a store on the other side of the building if you were wanting to buy your own gear.

Friendly and helpful staff. CAUTION, fake news: We wanted to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and they very convincingly told us there were alpine conditions, with snow, ice and everything. So we equipped ourselves with crampons and sturdy boots. Turned out this was completely unnecessary, you could have done the hike in sneakers and a sweatshirt. Don't take their advice too seriously, just check the weather forecast and ask someone who has done the hike recently. If you're used to hiking, the Alpine Crossing is just a normal longer hike with very nice views.

Very nice service and quality of rental! Pricing good too - it’s good to rent for 7 days, and then you can get money back if you bring it earlier (after 2/3/5 days). Also you don’t have to pay for days when mountain is closed (but that counts only if the both sides are closed and ALL tracks too - if just learning Happy Valley is open - they call it OPEN MOUNTAIN!)So definitely recommended, if you know that weather is good and you will use gear for at least 3 full days, otherwise it will be cheaper to just rent what you need on the mountain when you will actually be on there. We rented for 7 days and brought back after 5, but actually used just for 2 days because of weather, we got refund.
