We did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing track and it was one of the best day hikes we did so far! Definitely worth it if you are in the area!A few tips to make your trip better:* book a shuttle in advance because the car park is limited to 4 hours only and the hike takes between 6 to 9 hours depending on how fast you walk, how many breaks you take for pictures, etc* there is no shop/restaurant or anything on the track so make sure you have enough water and snacks with you. I would recommend 1.5 - 2 liters.* good footwear is required! This is a volcanic track so some parts are a bit slippery because of the volcanic terrain. Hiking boots with good ankle support would be best in my opinion* take a wind jacked with you, gloves and a beanie. A part of the track was particularly windy and it is easy to get cold up there if you are not dressed properly.* photo tip: take a time-lapse with the volcano❤️ The clouds move very fast and they create an amazing viewNote: check the weather before! You will not be able to see anything if the weather is bad :(

This is the best hiking experience you can find in the North Island, considering Tongariro is one of the worlds oldest national park. After extensive research, this hike was difficult about 7/10 I would say with my above average fitness level. DOC estimates around 7-8 hours to hike but I managed to complete it in around 6 hours one way with the last couple hours being the easiest walk. You will also need to arrange a shuttle at the beginning, I highly recommend which is priced around $35 depending on the websites. Overall I highly recommend this hike to anyone, every steps is worth it at the end.

Very beautiful location nice and cold for a family touring. The ha dial ride was amazing just a bit pricy $45 for adult just to travel on top. The cafeteria on top has beautiful views as well food family spot.

It was an unforgettable experience in my life. We took 10 hours for 19.4km trip. It’s quite easy to hike.

One of the best hikes I’ve ever done. Stunning views of aftermath of past volcano activities and dry craters.

Great views, definitely a challenging walk and not for the ill-prepared. Please bring water and adequate food, the hike is longer than most people assume. But the views are absolutely spectacular, really a place to check out for nature lovers who don't mind a longer stroll.

Gorgeous park!! Many great views. Be sure to wear study shoes if you have ankle problems. I rolled my ankle a few times on some loose rocks. There is a track near Tongariro Chateau that takes you to a waterfall in under 2.5 hours/ 4km . Highly recommend!

Known as one of the best day hikes in the world, how could we not conquer this 12.3 mile point to point hike while in New Zealand?! Boy was it a challenge. Mother Nature was brutal and we were warned by our shuttle driver but we decided to take on the challenge anyways as we are avid hikers with the right equipment. The 60+ mph winds at the summit and low visibility made the views we did get a peek at even that much more special. As much as we would have loved to have a crystal clear day, it wouldn’t have made as fun of a story. We came, we saw (kind of), and we conquered Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Here are the musts:1) Proper Equipment for the weather. Highly recommend hiking boots. There is a scree field just after the summit where traction is tough. Ankle protection is best. Hiking poles are helpful. The hike is long, the descent is incredibly long. Waterproof gear is an absolute must in weather like we had. Headlamp with fresh batteries if starting at 5am like we did. And water, of course.2) Don’t do the trail backwards. That scree field would be very tough to get up and the ascent is SO long (and it wreaks of sulfur).3) Be prepared for extreme conditions. It is nature, after all.4) Have fun! It’s an incredible hike.
