We really enjoyed watching the penguins come home at dusk. We saw 4 from the perfectly located viewing platforms. Binoculars recommended, since you should only watch them from distance.

Great experience, wonderful spot. We didn’t see the penguins, we were too early, but plan to return at dusk one day.

Nice quiet beach. View of the old petrified forest visible trace of the forest. This is also a penguin sanctuary and they close at 5pm as the penguins begin to make their way back to the shore.

Some petrified trees are visible even at high tide, so don't let that deter you! Our timing was about as bad as possible (arrived 15 minutes before high tide) but still saw several petrified logs. If the tide and wildlife conditions allow, I recommend going onto the beach rather than just staying on the viewing platform. Some of the trees aren't obvious until you're basically right on top of them.

Around 8 pm (January) you can watch on the viewing platform the Yellow-eyed penguin coming out of the sea towards their burrow. Unfortunately it is not going well with these penguins. Only three are left at this please!

Disappointed nothing open at visitor center and toilets locked so just old old ones to use shame as lots of people arrived while we were there

The fossils of the forest is mind blowing. The big waves that hit the rocks is thrilling. Make sure to check low tide times as water started rising really quickly. No luck with the penguins for us as it's nesting season.
