A great little 90 MW hydro power station hidden away off the main road. One can drive over the dam. It was built during WW2 and so was delayed in being completed. It is the final dam on the Waikato River and the second one to be built.

Opened in 1977. First of the upper waitaki power scheme power stations. (Ohau A, B then C power stations came after this). Its technically an underwater power station with 2 generators - located 3 floors below the causeway to the building/so are below water level. Now operated by Genesis who also operate Tekapo A power station.Photos were taken during the open day in 2023 show the power station construction back in the day - before the lake was raised to surround the building as it does now. Very impressive engineering at the time. Its aged badly and looks like a drab 70s office block now. From a dystopian sci-fi movie set.The information plaques near the causeway (also shown here in photos) provide good information about tekapo B and the canal and wide power scheme. The location is fantastic on a fine sunny day - well worth a visit.

Well, it's a power station, obviously. But it also hides a secret canyon, accessible by the water, that is the most magical place to see glow worms (that aren't really glow worms)!! Visited by kayak on a tour from Waimarino Adventure Park. It was really spectacular and super informative.

This place is amazing. As entering the village there is a turn off where u can go to the bottom of the dam. Of you miss the lil turn off it takes you to the top. My pop workd here back in the days, as a kid he took menfor a tour the inside is amazing! Wish they still did it.
