my review is relevant for the time I did this trek at November 2013. I did this trek in two days, the firs day from Robert Ridge Route. we slept at angelus hut (bunk beds - you need to pre order space at peek season). the second day we did the Speargrass Creek Route. note that there hard sections to go through and you need to check the weather first. no need to bring special gear for climbing, but you need some fitness in order to complete these tracks in 6 hours. also it was not always easy to find our way, although it's marked in poles with orange arrows. I recommend starting early in the morning (it took us 8 hours to complete the first day trek).

Good facilities. Very exposed travel to the Hut. Cascade is hard/difficult going if you are travel up to Angelus with a loaded pack so take time and begin early in the day.

The track to the Angelus hut is challenging. Pick your clothes for different weather, it’s change very quickly. The hut is nice, you can’t drink the water from there unless that you boil it. Inside the hut is super warm and modern with outstanding views of lake Angelus, massive surrounding mountains.

Just finished a 3 day March hike up to Angelus Hut and back down along the ridge line return route with Active Adventures of NZ. I agree that first day was easier Lake, lowland hiking. Lots of rain, so waterproof your rain gear. Second day became more of a challenge with rocks, vertical, testing your fitness and wits. Stay on the trail. I agree that at many points higher up-forget Your poles, and use your hands and feet to get up rocks and boulders. Tough trek at end of second day to the top, but it was worth it! Great Hike!

Breathe taking view up 1600m above sea level, a very good hike to challenge your fitness, as well as your courage.Starts with walking up the slope, then flat field and followed by kilometers of up hill stroll and hikes on rocky formation, without any safety net. Do not rely or hold on to the pole, most of it is not steady. The weather up there change quite rapidly as well, so be prepare. The Angelus Hut is clean and well maintain, with only 28 bunk, compost toilet, untreated water and a fireplace, we did not bring stove or cooking stuff, but we did get a hot meal after we place all our tuna cans on top of the fireplace. The message on the sign of DOC is Your safety is your own responsibility"."

Great hut. You have to make reservations before you go.One social room with stove. Two sleeping rooms with bunk beds. There is also campsite. Toilets without paper. You have to boil water before use.

Absolutely amazing alpine hike! You can do the return in one day as well. The hut was actually booked so Instead I stayed in Coldwater hut and from there went up the Cascade track and returned trough Robert ridge route. It was a long day but totally worth it!

The tramp to the Angelus hut is challenging but the destination is worth it. Pick your weather as this is an alpine hike and the weather can change very quickly. Pack for all conditions and you will be fine. The ridge track is both steep and demanding with about 4km of boulder and rock climbing. The valley route is a bit easier and should be used if bad weather is forecast. The hut is warm and modern with outstanding views of lake Angelus, massive surrounding mountains. I would rate the walk as hard but the destination is amazing.

We stayed at the hut for one night on a three days tramp. The hut is nice and new, the price is a bit too expensive (30 $ pp in March) compared to other huts in the park which was a bit disappointing. We climbed up Angelus peak which is a nice afternoon walk from the hut (took us 3 hours return)
