There is a fence at the end of the road where you park. From there you walk over the sand dune. It is steep on the other side way down. I found warm water straight out from the yellow pole at low tide. It wasn't hot but it was warm and very enjoyable. There was no one else there when we were and it was incredibly beautiful.

Great beach, not too crowded on a summer weekend. To enjoy the hot springs, make sure to go at low tide - dig your feet in places just to the right of the path you took to the beach (when facing the ocean).

Great place to go. Not crowded at all just make sure you check the tide times to make sure you get there at low tide. Bring a shovel and dig yourself a hot tub. The sea was a nice temperature so cool off , waves good for a body board and the sand perfect for skim boarding. There are toilets by the car park.

Beautiful big beach, although we didnt explore to find the hot water, the swim in the waves was worth it. Extremely hot sand walking over the sand dune, so covered shoes is a must. Take your shovel if your finding the hot water :)

Kawhia is another hot water beach, not as famous as the one near Cathedral Cove. It is clean and less exploited, no infrastructure for a large mass of tourists. Has a small changing room with a toilet (with toilet papers in place !), but no showers. To reach the beach, you need to go up a sand hill, it is less than 5 minutes, and your fitness level is well tested. Waves at the high tide were strong and soften as the tide lows. We didn’t have the chance to dig for hot water because we left before the tide went lower. Great place to relax with few users around. Must bring everything, including drinking water and food.

Tide times are important but being December and and incoming tide we had a good sea swim. Area needs protecting as special. No fires and dunes need protecting. Spade handy .

Caution! Sand could be HOT! Easy to seriously burn your feet. Be careful if you take your dog with you. Beautiful wide beach though! Make sure to come during low tide and dig yourself a hot tub.

We have friends that live in the area and whilst we've been to Kawhia a few times, had never been to Ocean Beach. It was news to us we could dig a hole at low tide and make ourselves a hot water bath. A great experience, topped by watching someone Kon-Tiki fishing.

The best hot water beach in New Zealand. Just dig a hole in the sand, put water in it and it will heat. Best part of it, we were only 5 people on the beach when we went there in November.

My family was so glad we visited the Kawhia Hot Water Beach. For our visit in early November, we only had to share the beach with a couple of other groups. The landscape is beautiful. The hot water pools we dug for ourselves exceeded expectations. What a magical experience for our family!
