The food, though very good was very expensive. More a family style service, a plate with 12-14 small pieces of chicken will set you back almost 30 bucks. The twice cooked pork was very, very good and just the right bang to it. Our server was very, very good. Quick, very attentive, and got our subsequent orders out quickly. We were placed outside and it started to rain. The cover over the outside terrace was leaking badly. The water began to affect the lanterns outside as they started to flick on and off. Would suggest that management sort out the exterior dining for customers comfort and safety.

Today I had the opportunity to have dinner on Valentine's Day at Midnight Shanghai the first time. We chose this restaurant because it's conveniently located in the heart of Christchurch, on the 2nd floor of the Riverside Market. The restaurant is nice decorated in Chinese style. We reserved a table about 4 days before Valentine's Day but got a table to share with others. But we thought this may be our fault because we didn't tell the staff first that we would like to sit at a table for 2, but they provided us with a new table later. Good service staff , good tasting cocktails and food tastes available. But the food waited quite a long time and wasn't that hot when serving especially the xiao long bao. And we ordered stir fried noodles with honey bbq pork, the taste was ok but quite oily. Stir-fried Kong Pao Chicken with good taste but does not come with rice, must be ordered separately (Quite disappointed because the price for this dish $32 should come with rice if it's another restaurant) and should repeat to the staff to bring rice with main course because we got rice after serving cocktails. But we asked the staff to bring it back and give us a new one with food and the staff do it willingly. We didn't order desserts at the shop because they didn't look interesting. Overall we rated it 3/5 this time and not sure if we will go back again.

My partner and I booked a table at Midnight Shanghai for a childless date! The whole night was perfect. The cocktails were delicious and the food was phenomenal. The Salt Pepper Fries were the best fries we’d ever eaten! The staff were some of the friendliest we’d ever met, making us feel comfortable and relaxed! If you’re looking for a unique night out, we highly recommend Midnight Shanghai and we can’t wait to come back! From some very happy and satisfied customers!

Smashing food, smashing service, and the place has an awesome vibe. The whole team was incredibly friendly and made my family’s dining experience top class. Jared and Connor were awesome to deal with and did a wicked job of the cocktails we had.

A delicious time at Midnight Shanghai! I was pleasantly surprised by how strong the dishes were across the board.We had the xiaolongbao, chilli oil wontons, sichuan mapo tofu, Wok fried market greens, beef chow fun, and the sticky beef short ribs. Don't expect the food to be very traditional, as it isn't, but it's very tasty!My standards were the greens, tofu, and short ribs. The weakest dish was definitely the xiaolongbao, not a great rendition.Service was attentive and polite but not overbearing.Their cocktails were also very good and a fun accompaniment to the food.I would absolutely recommend visiting.

Really great place to go with a group of friends. I would highly recommend taking the shared plates approach. The staff are very knowledgeable, we were served by a bloke named Jared who is exceptional at his job. If you are willing, do go by staff recommendation for your plates. It made for a great experience. The food was exceptional, very high standard and were delivered in good time. We all tried a variety of their cocktails which were delicious - all definitely worth the price.The plate costs are about what you would expect for a nice restaurant. If you're starving and want a huge amount of food for low-cost this probably won't suit you. I probably also would not reccomend this place for a family meal unless you have older children.

We shared the Trust the Chef" menu and it was utterly incredible. The flavours and presentation were phenomenal. We have ate in a LOT of different asian restaurants

Really really love the tofu here. Possibly the best tofu in town. Also a great atmosphere and fantastic service.
