I worked for Opac in 2011 in Opotiki for main season, CA after season work, and repack. I worked night shift and worked 10 hours a day sometimes 12. I was a grader. We had no mats to stand on for the first month of my work there until someone mentioned we should have some , someone that they listened to as before that they didn't care . Also we were rarely allowed to sit down. The pain in my legs was hard to deal with from lack of mats . Then never being able to sit down. Our night foreman Lyla was lovely, they gave me a sheet of paper telling me I was a top performer meant to be an award I guess. Then my husband died when I was at work I ran home and found him and that's when my work nightmare with Opac really amped up. I went back to work 10 days after he died and the night shift people were awesome to me but the season soon ended and it was time for CA and merging with Day shift. These people were awful to me, cold and heartless I gave all I could everyday but they almost enjoyed torturing me as I wasn't a 100 percent and still effected by going home and finding my husband dead. I had to quit during repack I couldn't take the abuses anymore. I find that they treat returning workers there badly. People have been with them for years. A woman I met her husband dropped dead in the orchards and they just don't care. The supervisors and there are quite a few are very heartless except for Lyla on night shift. No matter I was one of their top workers before my husband died they just throw you away for another. demoralizing job. A person feels used in the end. They just don't care. The only saving grace were the lovely Samoan women who worked night shift during main season. They took it all with a smile. They were stowed away at a camp far from town and had money taken out of their pay for basic accommodation, etc... they were really exploited. The supervisor in repack a very large woman with 5 children that came off very bitter had it out for me. Harassed me , saying who cares your husband died. shoving missed kiwi fruit into my face with real anger. I quit on the spot after one of her abuses luckily I could do that at that point otherwise I would have been trapped there like a lot of the local workers are. I was told they had to be there ordered by Wins. I was working there an immigrant with a university degree as I couldn't find another job , also I was in my 50's and had only really been a housewife for years. This industry needs to give better pay and treatment to locals that are returning for season after season. They need to care more for their workers and offer pay rises to the loyal workers. And sick leave if for example your husband dies, etc..Or at least treat someone with some empathy.
