Springfield Store & Cafe

I don't know the owners personally but I think our journalists need to get up and do some better roving. Maybe looking into why so many Cantabs suffer from damp homes or how more and more of our people are struggling to provide for their families. Actually, several have made the point about their pies. Their pies are absolutely exquisite! Please go in and evaluate the place before you bag this place. If not, you're just being bullies

Ordering food here is a mistake I'll never be making again.Stopped by for a quick meal break on a road trip, and got an extra side of verbal and racial abuse that I was sure I didn't order. How generous.Oh, and the toastie tasted as feral as the couple who ran this joint looked. Give this place a miss if you value your life.

We stopped here for some snacks and were shocked by how bad the older owners treat their customers. The man was rudely yelling out orders and the old lady pretty much kicked out a couple over a question they ask. They had no baby seats so we had our one year old seated on our table and we got yelled at to take our baby off our table by the old lady. The young lad at the counter was fantastic though, I almost felt I wanted to rescue him from the place as he was super sweet and intelligent and the owners could learn alot from him. Our experience here almost felt like comical joke. Oh well, atleast their pies were nice and the young boy serving made up for the shockingly offensive owners.

Come here if you wish to spoil your journey... most unhappy lady I have ever witnessed.

The owner is very rude. I took my two under five years old in and looking for a warm food. The waitress looked after us told us that we have to use take away bags. We thought we could seat on the table to eat our food. Two pies and three hot chocolate for $25.15. Once we paid and seat down, the owner came out and screamed at me. She want us to leave because we are only eating takeaway food. She said that after we use the table it will cost her to clean it up. How could she even in business! My boys got very sad and scared. Never going back there again.

Pleasant and friendly staff. Basic set up - nothing fancy, but clean and tidy. Does plenty of fried food options and has a cold food cabinet, but I opted for a pie. Pretty decent. Chips okay. Kids loved the milkshakes made here. Despite all the hype of free verbal abuse, none eventuated. This place has a steady stream of travellers coming and going, so I suspect business isn't doing too badly. Would come here again.

Super friendly staff who make the best pies in New Zealand. I don't think I have met a nicer couple than Donald and Karyn. They really are two amazing people and I am nominating them in the New Zealand Hospitality Awards.I have been visiting the Springfield Store and Cafe since 2010 and they just keep getting better. The pies are so good that in my will I have requested when I die, a Springfield Angus Steak and Blue Cheese pie be placed into my casket along with a bottle of Chi Mineral Water.You cannot find a better place for pies in New Zealand - They are award winners after all.Please pay no attention to these negative reviews. Donald is such a nice man, he would probably give you a hand shandy if you asked for one. Karyn on the other hand is an attractive elderly woman who holds high standards in her busy little kitchen.Thanks for being part of our lives Karyn and Don, you are appreciated.On behalf of the Billington Family from Oxford.

I just can't believe the other reviews on here! Karyn and Donald Cullingford are two of the nicest people I have ever met. They are kind, caring and they even go as far as putting nice little free extras into meals. I think that negative reviews on these two lovely people, who are in my opinion, pillars of society is an organized attack. Not only would I trust Karen and Donald with my life, but I would trust them with my four children.Karen is just so lovely when it comes to customer service. She always has a smile on her face and is just so friendly. She reminds me of my mother in someways, a church-going, God-fearing South Island woman with high morals.You don't see the wonderful Donald much as he is always out the back cooking some of the finest cusine New Zealand has to offer. From what I know, Donald is actually a Michelin Star Chef who retired in 1999 and moved from France to New Zealand in fear of the Y2K bug. Donald has the most positive outlook on life.When I think about the two wonderful Springfield Store and Cafe owners the following words come to mind - Sincere, honest, graceful, creative and beautiful. You really can't find better store owners. The prices are so fair! At the end of the day it is customer service, served with a side of love.NB: I was not paid to write this.

Came here with my family. No one in NZ was so rude to me before. I really wanted to leave but my family was hungry so we stayed. I can't get over about how rude this women was. Incredibly unfriendly. I'll never come back here again. The Burgers we had were average. There was a hair on top of one of them but we were to afraid to return it . Fish and chips rather bad. Gelato was alright.Actually walked in because of the massive sign saying pies". They didn't have a single pie."

We made a morning stop by the Springfield Cafe during our drive from Aurthur's Pass to Christchurch and found their coffee & pies to be pretty good.This place seems to get slammed on TripAdvisor regularly by other reviewers. To be fair, we didn't encounter any of the problems regularly mentioned about this small town cafe. Service was fine during our visit. Long Black coffees tasted bold and good. Pies were pretty good.Our Peppered Steak pie was nice. Crust was flaky and the filling was a goo mix of peppered beef and gravy. We really liked the steak, mushroom and blue cheese pie. Again, good crust and a nice filling, capped with the stronger blue cheese.In the end, this was a good morning stop for coffee and pies, nothing more nothing less.
