Herbert Forest Campground

Fantastic area to camp, outdoor fires were excellent at night, great river to swim in, clean and tidy. Mark the owner was great and came for a chat. Met some great people and new friends. The place is a hidden gem, rebooked another stay.

Wow!! I have lived here 30 years and only ever driven past till now! If you're looking for a peaceful, tranquil setting to camp up for a night or two at very affordable prices, then this is the place to go!!! Full clean and tidy amenities; toilets, showers, kitchen with microwave and oven. Clothes washing facilities. A short walk to popular swimming holes in the river and a great place to meet new people.

Just came back from here definitely coming back. Stunning scenery peaceful place. Kids had a absolute ball and owners are down to earth good people. Definitely rate herbert forest campground. Camping as it should be with added bonus of toilets and showers. See you guys again next time will be longer stay

We had a short but delightful stay at Herbert Forest Holiday Park. Our cell phones didn't work forcalling NZ numbers but Mark was very responsive and helpful over email. He allowed us to arrive lateand just do our check in and payment the next morning before we left. We had some problems with our campervan and he was kind enough to let me borrow his cell phone so I could call the rentalcompany to coordinate a solution. This park has lots of trees and it really does feel like you're stayingin a forest as opposed to other parks where it feels like you're camping on a football field surrounded by other campers. There were other campers around but we were spread out and somewhat separated by the trees so it was very quiet and peaceful. I really appreciated Mark's generous hospitality and I'd gladly stay here again.

Sweet spot, super chill owner. Loads of space, some of our group brought horses which were able to graze the paddock next door. Toilets, showers, small kitchen facilities . Track down to Waianakarua River. I'd never been before but I'll quite happily be back.

After reading several excellent reviews about this place I just had to go and stay there. We only stayed for one night and we will definitely be coming back! We were told to set up camp where ever we liked. We picked a spot tucked under some of the many trees and then had a good look around.The toilets were spotless and smelt clean. The kitchen was small but very tidy and the showers too looked clean, although we did not use them. You push a button outside on the wall to start a 5-minute timer.A short (and well signed) walk along a track takes you down to the river which would be great on a hot summers day for all of the family to enjoy. There are lots of animals around for the kids to look at. Alpacas (or llamas if I'm incorrect!) turkeys, rabbits, and goats (who were friendly enough to let us pet them).There are fire barrels throughout the grounds and you can purchase a barrow load of wood for $5 and also a couple of playgrounds which my daughter loved.Very friendly upon arrival and they did appear to have EFTPOS - I am sure I read on one review that they didn't!I can't wait to stay here again and for hopefully a bit longer!

I stayed here in March and absolutely loved the place. A slice of New Zealand how it used to be - lots of open space to camp wherever suits you, well equipped tea rooms, good showers, firewood, and recycling facilities. I didn't get down to the river but I wish I had! Got chatting with one of the owners who is a lovely bloke, clearly takes great care and pride in maintaining this hidden gem. In my opinion this is much nicer than your average DOC campground and at only $12.50 a tent site it's an absolute steal.Thanks for having me, I'll def be back!

Good campground. Lovely setting under the trees. A couple of paddocks next door so kids can see the animals, lama's and sheep. Kitchen is small but sufficient, everything was clean. Unisex showers with push buttons. Recommend is good distance from main Rd so you don't get truck noises.Short walk through the paddock and you are at the river.

Beautiful location and we loved the peacefulness of it. Good walk to swim hole and great surreandings. Best if all not staying right next to strangers. Plenty of room. Highly recommend to family and friends ☺️

Great wee spot just off the highway, friendly staff. Big river swimming hole, can light your own fire on your site. Clean facility's highy recommended
