Sands Carving Studio

Sands Carving studio is an incredible and beautifully spiritual space. I was traveling in NZ for 3-months and wanted to buy authentic NZ Pounamu, carved by locals with the respect and mana that this gorgeous ancient stone deserves. I really struggled to find a source until I was in Hamilton for one day. Alex, Crystal and Madison were amazing and so helpful with what we were looking for. We found two perfect pieces that truly spoke to us as soon as we saw them. A Matau (bone) and Pikorua (Kawakawa pounamu). Crystal was amazing and gave us a tour of the studio and met the carvers, who were all very nice and talented! Alex, the owner, was really accomodating and welcoming. Absolutely fantastic people and this is the ONLY place I will purchase pounamu from in the future. We could have hung out there all day! I visited the studio to buy my wife a present unsure of what I really was looking for.The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable and helped me pick out the perfect gift. They explained the meaning of the carving very clearly and made me feel confident in my selection.

Amazing place! A must do for anyone looking for pounamu or that something for a special occasion. Amazing stuff, do commissions and fix existing pieces. A one stop shop!

The reviews are so extremely positive so why did I have a bad experience. Showed his staff a photo of a piece for sale in Auckland art gallery $290. At his studio the equivalent was $390 and whats more, not prepared to negotiate. Have lost faith in buying direct from maker. Alex came into shop heard some of the discussion but walked outdealers

The experience of working with Alex was excellent from start to finish. He brought so much inspiration and intuitive understanding to the vision for the pounamu made for my partner. Of course the piece was stunning, and I was blown away how quickly he was able to make such a treasure come to life.
