Big Bush Holiday Park
Overpriced and underwhelming...Basic accommodation (no stove, AC or wifi) and meals which come with a big city price. Guests seem to be an inconvenience for the owners, but we pay the bills. Oftentimes, I felt like I was invading their space by asking the most rudimentary questions about the nearby Great Walk. (Only reason I was here.) If this is indicative of what a remote NZ Holiday Park is like, I'll stay in nearby towns in the future.

The hut was comfortable, I stayed there the night before starting the Lake Waikaremoana walk. Make sure you bring something to read/watch, as there is no Wi-Fi available (cellphone signal is poor). They provide all cooking utensils. They charged $35/night which was pretty reasonable. The restaurant was closed because it was low-season.Transport to/from Wairoa was provided for $50 per trip.

What a fantastic experience. Kerry and his team thoroughly covered all of our bases. We're two friends who walk quite independently but travel together, and Kerry and Annie's team made this work for us.First of all, we came from Auckland and stayed the night in Cambridge. We travelled via Rotorua - mistake. You'll hit a lot of gravel and landslides. We ended up running late and I kept calling Kerry until I ran out of phone range, but he kept saying keep coming towards me

Very friendly and helpful staff! They went the extra mile when helping us out after a breakdown, tremendous effort! Great restaurant/bar, good food and free pool table :-) Clean and affordable accommodation. Highly recommended.

Organisation and prices...We've paid exactly twice as much per person as other people staying at the same time. $35 a night in a backpackers, $50 for a shuttle (that's one way from Wairoa). Another $50 for a water-taxi that takes 15 minutes and that's all per person. I've called them to ask about the price difference and am still waiting for them to call back.People who had booked a private room were stored" in ours by just adding a fifth bed in there. It's a small thing but a good example.Avoid by all means."

Just came back from a week-long stay at Big Bush and I had the best time there! The isn't anything Kerry and the team don't know about the area and what to do, and they were incredibly helpful with any issues I came to them with. I'm missing those amazing cooked breakfasts already! Would go back in a heartbeat.

Comfortable accommodation is still available, but the cafe was not open at all during our week stay and the toilets/shower facilities for campers are almost derelict. Website needs to be updated to show the present situation. Very friendly and helpful cleaner/caretaker.

Transport to and from the walk was convenient and easy, Rick was very friendly and helpful. However the accommodation was not as advertised. We stayed in a backpackers room with double bed. It was not the same place shown in the photographs and is incredibly basic, was cold and not very clean, very scummy bathroom. No one was there when we arrived but the neighbour pointed us in the direction of our accommodation. No restaurant/cafe/bar as advertised either - we had to eat some of our food rations for the hike. Pig dogs barked all night and a free range cow damaged my car.

Relaxed hospitality. Wonderful to be invited to stay for free (self contained) before and after doing the great walk. Truly accomodating, they came right out to pick us up when we finished the walk a day early.

Some of the staff were lazy, too lazy in fact to charge us or pour drinks and our accommodation was basically a plywood cabin in a field. However transport was good and the place was clean. Fine for staying a night but wouldn't recommend much more.
