About the Business

Monkey Island/Te Puka o Takitimu & Beach | The fascinating Monkey Island can be reached by foot - but only at low tide! A stairway leads to the top of the island, where there are spectacular views of Te Waewae Bay and the mountains of Fiordland. Before the road from Riverton was formed, a slipway was built at the island so that boats (being the only means of delivering supplies) could be unloaded. A "monkey winch" was used to haul boats ashore and it is presumed that this is the reason it is called Monkey Island. It is known by Ngai Tahu (the local Māori tribe) as Te Puka o Takitimu, or the anchor stone of the legendary Takitimu waka (canoe) that was wrecked in the bay. They used the island as a traditional lookout for Southern Right Whales. This long uncrowded beach along the eastern end of Te Waewae Bay is perfect for horse riding, motorbiking or surfing, as well as picnicking, paddling and sand castle building - it's a great place for kids to play. While here, explore rock pools or take in a magnificent sunset. Camping, picnic and toilet facilities are available at the beach.

Monkey Island Beach
Absolutely fantastic freedom camping spot. Clean toilets (apart from one due to a sub-human emptying their cassette into it), a stunning view, lovely beach walk to Gemstone Beach, nearby cafe and the sunsets are unbelievable.

Awesome free camping spot on the South Coast. Great spot to come to if you are into surfing or just want to do some exploring on the beach or in the rock pools. The island" is only an island at high tide and at low tide you can walk out to it and climb the stairs to the viewing platform at the top for some stunning views down the coast."

Wow what a stunning beach and the water calm. The lagoon behind the island is packed with wildlife, sea stars were massive, so many different types of fish. Been snorkeling in NZ 3 months and we saw more here than anywhere. We also collected some mussels for lunch which were yummy. It does get busy on hot days. Please help to look after these treasures.

Responsible camping area alongside beach road. Two vault style toilets and two big bins for rubbish. Non potable water available from building further up to the road but very slow trickle when I turned tap on. Best to get here well before 3pm as area fills up very quickly.

Monkey Island Beach
Monkey Island Beach is a true hidden gem. Open to all types of campers (including non self contained), no cost to stay and full of activities to entertain all ages. This is a very popular spot in the summer for camping, surfing, swimming, gemstone collecting, horse riding, motorbiking, picnics, fishing and walking on the beach. This is by far the best beach front freedom campsite in Southland. Equipped with two long drop toilet blocks, rubbish bins and beach front views.
