Fantastic place. Right on the beach, quick walk / swim to monkey island, gemstone beach just round the bay. Best sort of people camping there.

Close beach access and near Monkey Island. There are two long drops. Was there this February, must be popular as it was packed and spots were mostly taken by the afternoon so get there soon to avoid disappointment.

Nice free campground and a easy walk to Monkey island. It was very windy when we were there and the wind is coming directly from Antarctica, however if you drive to the end of the road there are a couple of campsites where you can be sheltered from the wind by the hill/dune

Great spot, beautiful beach! Toilets are as clean as long drop toilets get, with light and sanitizer. And big garbage bins.

For a completely free campsite, I have no complaints-- just appreciation! Monkey Island Beach is a true hidden gem. Open to all types of campers (including non self contained), no cost to stay and full of activities to entertain all ages. This is a very popular spot in the summer for camping, surfing, swimming, gemstone collecting, horse riding, motorbiking, picnics, fishing and walking on the beach. This is by far the best beach front freedom campsite in Southland. Equipped with two long drop toilet blocks and rubbish bins. Very safe and family friendly beach.

Such a great spot! We arrived on the 1st of Jan thinking we were pushing our luck to find a spot but there was a perfect place for us to pitch our tent. Each spot essentially has its own access to the beach. The toilets are clean and there are plenty enough for the people staying there. The beach is beautiful and quite shallow so it makes for great paddling and boogie boarding. We will absolutely be back here to stay again!

Free camping,we had fresh mussels for dinner,We saw a huge of starfish and an octopus, walking into monkey island when low tide, also you can see dolphins.
