Great views over the wonderful Bay of Islands with the added bonus of the historic significance of the place during the early stages of the Maori wars.Easy drive being just a couple of minutes from the centre of Russell or a brisk walk up the hill if the weather is nice.

This was our 4th trip to Russell in the Bay of Islands and not sure how we missed this amazing look-out before. The 360 views are amazing and so glad our new son-in-law suggested we visit Flagstaff Hill. The stunning views will always be remembered and if you are in the Russell area, be sure to include a visit here.

A hugely significant site in Aotearoa/New Zealand’s history. An interesting place to visit given its past. There is some interpretation at the site to give you a brief understanding of the history. On a fine day offers amazing panoramic view of the bay. A short walk or drive up from Kororāreka/Russell, about 15-20min walk up the road, ~30mins through the bush. The bush track can be uneven and muddy so be careful if you are unsteady. The wayfinding signs through the bush track are a little confusing as they all seem to say 30mins to Russell at every point along the track. Signposted as a Kiwi area, could be interesting to listen out for them at night.

I love coming here for the peace and quiet and to listen to the many kiwi (and occasionally see one too) and of course to take photos of the night sky...

This is an excellent spot to visit, both in terms of its historical significance, and also in terms of the beautiful views in many directions around the Bay of Islands.
