Very busy restaurant. Visited on a Monday night. We tried about 5 different small plates and the butter chicken main course. Most of the small plates were fried and lacking in flavour. The poppadoms were extremely overpriced and covered in some sort of tasteless powder.The lovely waitress asked us whether we would like our butter chicken mild,medium or hot. We asked for it to be hot and all they appeared to do was add a large extra sprinkling of paprika on the top of the dish. All this did was make the whole curry taste of paprika. We love a great Indian restaurant and are regular visitors to India from the UK and this was certainly not of the standard we were expecting.

We attended a function on a busy Friday evening.The venue is fantastic. The food was very tasty and the staff were friendly,helpful and attentive. I would recommend The Permit Room to anybody for a good night out. Thanks

Amazingly flavoured food during our dinner. Not the usual curry house food, authentic flavours and generous portions.Also for people looking for indian style chai, this is the place! Highly recommended.

I visited the Permit Room after being recommended it by friends. I was not disappointed. The food is amazing and very authentic. Such depth of flavors and not like your typical NZ style of Indian food. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for tasty authentic South Indian flavours.They also do amazing cocktails, which was a nice compliment to the meal.Well worth the visit!!!A shoutout to Alyssa for serving us some amazing cocktails, and giving great advice on food selections.

Sumptuous dishes from all over India, beautifully served. Our big family enjoyed a selection of small plates, before sharing a selection of larder ones. Hyderabadi Paneer and generous Dosa some of our favourites. Gorgeous setting (tiled bathroom with pressed tin roof!) and location by the trams and Victoria Park. Warm, friendly staff. We will be back!

The second time I’ve been here, gave the benefit of doubt first time but second visit was the same. Drinks service takes for ever, we ended up ordering next drink as soon as order arrived because they we so slow. Food wasn’t much better and the banquet was a rip off. 9 people and we got 6 starters and 6 mains, we would have been better ordering individually for the what they charged. As to the food itself, it was ok which was probably the only redeeming feature from the night. I won’t be rushing back.

We came a couple nights ago for dinner for two and the food and service was above and beyond. Our server told us about the south indian style dishes and recommended a couple of small plates and a large plate, and we still had room for dessert! Would highly recommend the paneer, and the prawns were excellent, incredible flavour. Will definitely be back next time we’re in town, thanks Permit Room

Couldn't fault the food, service and ambience but were told we could not take our leftovers due to our group dining with First Table. We were prepared to pay for a container and prepare it all ourselves but still told this was not possible. We get that times are hard in the hospitality business but in this day and age, it seemed obscene to waste this food.
