YHA National Park
By far the worst YHA we stayed at so far.Let‘s start with the positives:+ Good shower, enough water pressure but curtains with mold+ Clean room. Really impressed by the shared kitchen, was pretty clean and good appliances.+ Suitable locationNegatives:- Old rooms and beds. No (USB) charging ports, Sparse power outlets. No nightstands. You will feel the bed springs on the mattresses.- You can either chose between boiling hot water or cold water at your sink (there are two water taps). But soap is of course not provided!- No free WiFi. If you dare to buy it, check your data limit. And of course - wifi coverage is not guaranteed in your room, maybe in the lobbies downstairs.- Kitchen and lobbies are downstairs, rooms upstairs. If you open the window, be ready to be greeted by an intense smell of cooking fat.- No shower amenities.- No towels provided. You can rent them at the reception.- If you want to do laundry, you need coins. You can get them at the reception, but need to have a new zealand bank account, as they don’t accept credit cards.

Good location for outdoor activities and Tongariro Crossing. The kitchen was FULL of cockroaches, there was also some cockroaches in the dorm. Otherwise clean. The staff were helpfull and friendly.

Had booked for a motorcycle trip but had to cancel around 24 hours before hand because of cyclone Gabriel. The YHA National Park has a 48 hour cancellation policy. We asked if we could transfer the booking to 2 days later but were told we would have to pay for the cancellation and the new booking. My credit card was changed for the original booking. This is a little bit unfair given that NZ was under a state of emergency.Needless to say we booked somewhere elseGiven the circumstances I thought YHA national park would have been more flexible, not particularly customer friendly!

Perfect location to base your crossing hike and national park stay from with the shuttle leaving right from the front door.Basic but functional hostel with a large kitchen, cheap laundry, nice little climbing gym and a few common areas beyond the rooms. Unfortunately the town is pretty quiet these days and the hostel wifi doesn’t work so it does get slow on a rainy day or it would be that much better of a place.Tip: Gas station around the corner is functional but limited and spendy. Bring more supplies with you to save a 25 minute food drive.

Perfect for a traveler on a budget. Nice spacious kitchen, beds were nice, came with a towel, close to the Tongariro hike, nice indoor climbing area. Not luxury, but its great value for money.

Loved everything about this place but the mattress and pillows were painfully thin. Could feel the springs of the mattress in my ribs

Has the basics for a good price and handy location for many things. Staff were friendly and can help booking activities like shuttles for the Tongariro Crossing. Facilities are little dated and you use a better common space, but overall no major complaints. No free WiFi which seems odd these days but not the end of the world.

The YHA National Park seems to be a great option for travelers visiting the area. The location is ideal for those interested in skiing or hiking, with proximity to the ski fields and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The facilities at the YHA National Park, including the kitchen, showers, and rooms, seem to be well-maintained and in good condition. Additionally, the price appears to be reasonable, which can be a significant factor in choosing accommodation options.Overall, the YHA National Park is an excellent option for travelers looking for affordable and convenient accommodation in the area.
