Shorinji Kan Samurai Jiu Jitsu
If you are considering learning a martial art, then Japanese Jiu Jitsu is definitely worth exploring further. To avoid any confusion, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu are completely different.Because traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu was originally developed and used by Samurai, it has real life application for self-defense situations. This differs from some other forms of martial art, especially those which strictly adhere to the framework for a sport or an art/discipline, and may be less realistic to use with a completely unpredictable assailant. Not less valid pursuits; just have a different focus. The Samurai Jiu Jitsu Club in Hawke's Bay is uniquely privileged to have a direct connection to the origin of Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu. Steve Sensei learnt his craft under the renowned founder of Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu - Brian Graham Shihan - at the original club in Steve's home-town in Keighley, Yorkshire. It would be rare to find someone of comparable pedigree and experience in this little corner of the world. Many of the techniques taught by Steve Sensei are simple yet highly effective, without gratuitous force or violence. You learn how to take back control of a situation without necessarily hurting anyone. Though if needed, you can also use Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu to incapacitate someone twice your own weight or strength. You don't need to be exceptionally fit, strong or agile to learn and enjoy the classes, though participation over time will improve all of those things. The club is welcoming and upbeat, with members reflecting a mix of ages, gender and backgrounds. All current members joined as novices and as such, any one of us are happy to support and encourage the learning of new members.I highly recommend both Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu as a martial art style and equally, the Samurai Jiu Jitsu Club itself.
