Amazing hike up to the summit. If you are reasonably fit and motivated it should not take you the recommended time to climb. View from the summit is worth every step.

Did one day return hike of 16km to Mt fyffe summit 1st August(winter). It is a difficult, boring and tiring climb but the summit is worth the view. The snow on the mountains, the view of Kaikoura peninsula, endless ocean, if u close your eyes all you can hear is your heartbeat and the waves in far distant. Amazing experience. Better to do in pair or group, very boring climb for solo hike. The return trip is said to be 8hours. If you not use to such long hikes give yourself more time for this one, better to start early morning around 7-8am.We managed to do it in 7 hours with many small breaks and a long break at the summit.Carrying a stick is recommended if you want to spare your back from injury as it is just steep climb all the way till the summit.Make sure you carry sufficient water. We ran out of water and then used the snow to fill our bottles, it was fun.The mt Fyffe hut that comes half way is good place for resting if you going to camp for more than a day.Regarding Directions: we relied on google maps for directions to car park which was wrong. The actual directions is from SH1 turn to ludstone road, then swamp road and then to postman road. Keep driving till the end of the road till you will see signs to my fyffe carpark. 4wd is not necessary but will be good to have one on rainy day.

The hike up to the Mt Fyffe lookout is gruelling as it is a relentless uphill slog. Be prepared for a workout and bring plenty of water. Well worth the views though! The carpark is easily accessible via a gravel road and a toilet is located nearby, along with some picnic benches.

Good hiking area but is grueling and very steep. 45 mins up gets you to the lower Mt. Fyffe overlook.

It is hard rewarding track.... constantly up (almost no flats) and then constantly down. The breath taking views are worth the effort though.Make sure your knees are good enough for the descending part.Perhaps bring a pair of walking sticks

There are 1003 named mountains in Kaikoura Ranges.New Zealand’s mountains and the Chilean Andes are the only significant barrier to the moisture-laden westerly winds that circle the Southern Ocean. The Kaikoura ranges only emerged within the last five million years, during thePliocene Epoch, so they are relatively geologically young and very dynamic. For this reason, Mt Fyffe is right in the firing line for wild weather. The summit is at 1602 metres but Seaward Kaikoura's are exposed to wind and and heavy amounts of snow. Be prepared for adverse conditions at any time. The mountain was covered in mist / fog and proceeded to turn around and go down. The whole ideal, is to see spectacular views on a clear day. You are rewarded with superb views of the Kaikoura plains and peninsula, including views of Banks Peninsula and the North Island. The 8km steep climb from carpark to summit is a massive 1400 metres!A 4WD road goes right to the summit; a return journey of about 8 hours. Those wanting a shorter journey could go as far as Mt Fyffe Hut (5 hours return) or the lookout point near a firepond, which is just an hour above the carpark. The most common approach is from the Hinau picnic area at the end of Postmans Rd, over a locked gate and up the 4WD road.

Gorgeous views but you’ll work for them. It’s all uphill on loose gravel and rock.

Very tiring uphill climb. Best views are between the hut and summit, so I personally wouldn't just hike to the hut and back. Start early if planning to go to the summit as a day trip. Would have stayed at the hut though if I had more time, to give my legs a rest, plus the opportunity for stargazing and sunrise. Recommend to go on a clear day to have the best views. Went in mid-May, temp 2-7 degC, minimal frost.
