Lyell Camping Ground - Buller Gorge
R and I stopped off here. It was a possible camping ground. We parked and walked across the bridge and several hundred meters of the Old Ghost Road. The walk is quite spectacular, lots of ferns and lichens, steep drops down the gorge into the river. There was the sound of bird song, but few birds showed themselves to by lens other than a Robin.Going the other way you can walk down into the gorge.Did we camp, no, the sand flies put an end to that. We were being eaten alive. So 5* for the location, and 3* for the camping because of sandflies

Nice place, heaps of sandflies, pretty view, pretty good long-drops not too smelly, the wekas were very bold and rather annoying as they kept trying to steal your things

Worst case of sandflies I’ve ever seen! Don’t bother to walk down to the river, you’ll be eaten alive. A real shame, because it’s such a beautiful place.

Great spot for the beginning of the old ghost road. Just remember to have good sandfly sprays!

Lyell Camping Ground - Buller Gorge
Ground very wet so can't park on grass at moment which makes a small parking area. Toilets are a bit smelly but clean. The bugs are a pain in the arse but not bad during the winter. Start of the Old Ghost Road cycle trail.

Beginning/end of Ghost Road Trail.Good camping spot , with plenty of room. A basic DOC camp, with toilets. No cellular reception.Take your insect repellent. Well worth the short stroll to the Croesus Battery.

Great place to stop for lunch in a torrential shower of rain. Having visited before we didn't bother discovering more of the interesting history of the area as we will be back. It is very very interesting to explore.

Apart from the sandflies a nice, tidy, camp ground. Good toilets, eating areas etc.
