Black Estate, restaurant and cellar door
The Black Estate Cellar Door is an experience to be had. An hour outside of Christchurch it is the perfect distance for a warm drive through vineyard country, before a 5 star meal. With a selection of their own wines they offer a simple often changing menu inspired by the products of the local value. The lamb was fabulous and with seasonal truffles was one of the best meals of my life. The menu is surprisingly affordable at $40 a main, with wine around $50 a bottle. Book ahead.

We stopped for lunch at Black Estate and it was amazing. We had the chips and dip celeriac and chicken pie. Service was brilliant and overall worth the money.

Over priced small meals. Waiter didn't inform us about separate vegetables? Beautiful location but not worth eating there. Left feeling hungry sadly.

Outstanding food, very good wine, gorgeous setting, but slow service let the restaurant down unfortunately (lunchtime on Sunday).I imagine it would be perfect at a quieter time.

When you go to eat at a place with a small menu, 9 times out of 10 the food will be fresh and seasonal. This is always the case with Black Estate. Plus, it's local and organically produced wherever possible. Big ticks all around for this foodie! The Poaka cured meats plate is a must-try. Poaka pigs are free-range, organically raised, fed on beautiful acorns and chestnuts, and produce the most incredible, delicious cured meats. They simply melt in the mouth!Black Estate's wines are certified organic and taste all the better for it. These are not your run-of-the-mill cookie-cutter wines, so if you're only after a certain kind of flavour type, such as Central Otago pinot noir or Marlborough sauvignon blanc, you may not appreciate these wines. They are different and definitely stand out from the crowd. For sure, it's worth whiling away a few hours on a warm, sunny day at Black Estate. Make sure you book a table, though. It seems that everyone and their dog has discovered this gem!
