Bikes and Beyond Waiheke

We hired scooters a few weeks ago. Overall the scooters were okay, but tired. I’d like to make anyone considering hiring their bikes aware of a few things. 1) my helmet didn’t fit well, and there were no smaller options available. I had to wear a cap underneath, which wasn’t great. 2) the battery life isn’t what was advertised. We drove (two people on one bike) to Onetangi & back, and I was rather stressed we may not make it back. I only weigh 50kg, and my son 48kg. We did made it back with enough battery, but not comfortably. If you’re wanting to get around the island I’d suggest you hire petrol bikes from Island Scoots instead. 3) We pre-booked our bikes, but the bikes had been hired out when we arrived (even though we even pre-paid). So we ended up having to hire one bike from Island Scoots around the corner (they were AMAZING, and the correct size helmet). The owner was rather arrogant and not overly apologetic. He certainly didn’t try hard to make amends, such as a small discount for wasting our time and having to spend time finding another bike from elsewhere (which also cost us extra). Overall, buyer be ware… ! They over promise and under deliver.

Great place to get bikes in Waiheke. Prices are ok, service is excellent and the bikes saved us SOOOOO much effort - it’s a really hilly place!

Cheapest bike hire on the island. We reserved and paid for 3 E-bikes online, and turned up about 10.45am. They found some bikes for us but I got the impression they hadn’t saved them for us specifically, or really even knew we were coming….it just happened they still had some left. I would be wary of this if you’re planning to turn up later rather than earlier like we did! The bikes are a bit old and make some bad noises at times, but most of them worked fine (one bike didn’t have working breaks though…). Overall it was fine but we realised you get what you pay for!

Booked 4 premium e-bikes at this shop. We turned up at 11:20am to pick them up to be told that they'd given away all the e-bikes and that they only honoured the booking before 11:30 (not mentioned anywhere on the booking). Once we pointed out to the chap serving that it wasn't 11:30 yet he begrudgingly agreed to provide 4 'standard' bikes.We were promised 50kms range. Sadly one of the bikes barely managed half of that. When we returned the bikes and pointed this out to the chap working there his only response (literally) was that we should have called him. This might make sense, although since the battery failed only 5k from the shop we didn't see the bother. Also having done some bike swaps after the battery failed, we realised the acceleration on the bike was essentially useless after 15 degrees elevation.Having read other reviews, this shop clearly has a policy of giving out the premium bikes to whoever turns up first (despite no mention of this on bookings).Really disappointing response to quite reasonable concerns from us. Avoid this shop at all costs (more than happy to provide booking details to verify).

Booked 2x $65 e-cruiser bikes online, the pick up process was easy enough.Unfortunately less than 2 hours into our journey, one of our bike chain snapped. By the time we got the bike back to the workshop, we were tired and hungry so didn't bother to test out another bike.Not the Waiheke trip we had in mind for sure. We didn't go onto gravel road, in fact we were on a busy main road when the chain snapped, luckily no one got hurt!

Great experience - we got the electric bikes which were so much easier and faster (especially up hill) than the non-electric.We did see non-electric for $40 when we got off the ferry but chose the electric for $60 due to reading other people’s reviews about how hilly it is.So much to see and do! And so much fun!The service was friendly and efficient. They give you a map and show you how to use the bikes.Highly recommend!Great day for singles, couples or families with slightly older kids (due to having to ride on the road at points where there is no bike path).

Not only is Chris the owner a lovely guy but his knowledge and advice he gave us when buying an E-Bike was second to none. We were able to try loads of different bikes and he even brought bikes across from Auckland especially for us to try as my wife is tall and needed something quite specific. In the end we settled on a Whatwheels which is absolutely awesome and a pleasure to ride. Thank you Chris for being so personable, and for providing us with honest advice without any pressure to buy a specific brand or model. We will definitely be back and will continue to recommend you to others.

I usually don't post negative reviews, but this is worth reiterating the many negative reviews about this shop chain and to warn people about the owner of this shop - Chris, is very rude, has appalling customer service and very unprofessional. He gets irritated with phone calls and deems all customer calls a nuisance (his voicemail proves this). I only called him twice in a 2-week time span and in both occasions told me off, saying i'm preventing him for doing his job!" He wants you to pay but he will refuse committing a date to complete the job. He has all the excuses up his sleeve. His staff are ok

Bikes had once a better life. Mine kept skipping and loosing the chain, my wife’s battery went dead prematurely..The island is not that bike friendly IMHO, as we are confined to ride on the streets with lots of traffic. I would not recommend that mode to visit that island which is however absolutely
