Lake Rotoiti circuit
Winter means no sandflies but often colder. Discuss with Visitors centre as lake can be high enough to cover track.Unforgettable

Lake Rotoiti circuit
Completed this track in 8 hours including 30 minutes for lunch and detour to Whisky's falls. DOC tells us the circuit is 21 kms but if you do the maths, it is more. I calculated that it is 27 to 29kms. We started off from West Bay to Kerry Bay and continued our walk to Lakehead hut. The water between Coldwater hut and Lakehead was ankle deep. We could have cross it but we climbed over a fallen tree and made it across. We had lunch at coldwater hut and then another 45 minutes walk to Whisky's Fall. It takes 20 minutes return to Whisky's falls from the Lake Rotoiti circuit. Then from there 90 minutes to My Roberts road. This stretch is up hill but only like 300 meters long. It isn't steep to put you off walking or hiking. From there is 30 minutes back to West Bay. This stretch is on gravel road. Some motorist are not considerate while driving. They leave a trail of road dust behind. The circut it self is easy. It is not steep but flat. Some areas the track goes up and down but it is a gradual climb - maybe for 10 meters. All you need is lot of water to hydrate yourself. You can also prebook a water taxi. Water taxi cost $30 - $35 one way. You can go to Whisky's falls from West Bay towards My Roberts road. Whisky's falls is 60 m high. There are two DOC camps but they don't have treated water.I enjoyed this walk. If a fat guy like me can do it, you can do it too. Lake Rotoiti is my favourite lake in New Zealand.
