Nice ladies at the counter. Rented a pair of binoculars for $5 and went bird watching. They eventually joined with a scope that let me see much further and helped to identify the birds. Great experience!

It was quite the bird centre, with an abundance of information on birds and a nice selection of bird books to purchase. It has a free entry and you can donate $5 of you choose to. The scenery, in the summer, is incredible, with the bluest waters. Best of all, it is quiet and calm, as it is off the main road onward to Thames and is far away from the huge traffic jams near the Kopu intersection onward to the east coast of Coromandel. Because of this very few people go anywhere near the west of the Firth of Thames. Bird watching during my visit were early in the morning or past 7pm, in short during high tide. This is something that all visitors need to be aware of.

Friendly staff and useful info at the centre. A great spot to increase your.knowledge on NZ birds. Walking traxks and hides well maintained. (We were there at lpw tide so missed most of the birds. Try to be there around high tide time)

There's a trail right from the centre you can walk along all the way to where some bird blinds are. That walk is about 35 minutes. Alternately there's a parking lot right near the bird blinds if you want less of a walk. The centre itself is nicely laid out with displays, information about birds in the area, and a small shop with various things.

Located just beside the wetlands, the centre is a small building with some interpretive and taxidermy in an educational corner explaining the importance of the site for the East Australasian Flyway.Centre also has some merchandise and books for the avid bird watcher.

Excellent voluntary service by the locals- Free guide at the shorebird watching spot and the Free space to rest & refresh at the information center. All these with little expectation of donation from volunteers. However, the place is ideal for bird enthusiasts who also come far away from the world to witness these migratory birds. For others this might be something you stopover on the way. Ramanan Arampamoorthy
