Overall rental experience was decent but the post rental experience is the worst I ever had. The 1 star rating is for the post rental experience.Rental experience - Pick up took a while but this was expected given that it was peak season. Car was really dated but worked fine otherwise. Staff were welcoming and friendly.Post rental experience - This is when my experience started to go awry. When I returned the car, there were some minor scuffs on the bumper of the car. The owner proceeded to put a charge on my credit card before informing me of the cost of the damages or providing a damage report as most rental agencies do. That is unusual but I thought that perhaps small family owned rental agencies may operate differently from its larger competitors. My horrible experience comes from my interaction with the proprietor of the agency as I sought the information that my car insurance company needed to proceed my claim. He insisted that 1) I did not need those information (damage report, receipt for repair, rental agreement) since it was a small amount 2) that by asking for these information I am for some reason denying responsibility 3) that he has been in this business for 30 years so he knows better. He did provide a QUOTE for the repair but when I asked him to furnish additional information as required by the insurance company (I provided a screenshot of the agency's messages to me asking for a damage report), he decided to ignore me. It has been more than 2 weeks since I heard from him despite sending a gentle reminder. I tried to resolve this issue amicably but unfortunately, the goodwill is not reciprocated.

Had an excellent experience with Christchurch Car Hire yesterday. Todd was amazing and gave us excellent service from start to finish. Will definitely recommend them to anyone looking for exemplary service and good price.

Everything was fantastic! Rented a Toyota Vitz for a month to travel around the South Island, the car was in superb condition, no problem at all during the whole month. Pick-up and drop-off were fast and easy. In my opinion, really great value for money in comparison to the rest of rental companies. On top of that, the owners were just so nice, the attention was perfect! I would definitely recommend this company to rent a car in Christchurch!

Had the most wonderful experience with Christchurch Car Hire. Found them to be so very helpful, friendly, informative and he saved my holiday from being ruined. Honestly cannot recommend them high enough and I will be boasting about them to anyone who will listen. These people were fantastic to work with - very professional, helpful and kind. My sister was on life support and I had to rush from Auckland to Christchurch and hire a car on short notice. The car was clean and drove well and it was a great deal compared to other companies. Steve and his wife were very accomodating for the 2 weeks I needed the car. Highly recommend this company. Sure, the cars are older but ours was in great condition and ran perfectly for the two and bit weeks we had it. Some long journeys included. The team were all very friendly and helpful. Much better value than the mainstream rentals.

The price is good and the staff is friendly but the car rented was 14 years old and it was not mentioned when renting the car online. We drove long distances and the comfort in such old cars is really not the same. We did not have any mechanical issue though (I guess old cars are also more reliable when service is made appropriately)
