Okarito Trig Walk
a very nice and easy walk on a well maintained footpath. it took me altogether about 90 minutes to the top and back, including a 10 to 15-minute stay at the top viewing platform. awesome views up there!

If you do this walk on a clear and sunny day, then the views are absolutely stunning. At the summit you can see an awesome view of the west coast beaches and the okarito three mile lagoon are also amazing. It is a relatively simple and easy walk, starting from the car park with a board walk over wetland. Then it moves into the bush and climbs gently. After around 10 minutes you will reach a nice viewpoint of the wetland and boardwalk you just crossed.Continuing for another 15 minutes you will come to a view of the ocean and a bench - a nice place for a break. After another 15 minutes you will reach a turning point, left up towards the trig or continuing right to the coastal walk or three mile lagoon. By taking right onto a bridge you can have a beautiful rainbow coloured water and by continuing to coastal way you reach okarito beach and the to the parking. On the way back it is mostly downhill, so it will take less time to return, around 35 minutes.Total trip is around 1.5 hrs.It is one of the best things to do in Okarito and was well worth a trip from Franz Josef to do this walk.If it isn't a clear day, then I would recommend to skip this walk.

We didn't go to the trig. We went with a coach tour and people were surprised to see a coach. Our purpose was to go on the Lagoon and see the bird life ,which included the White Heron. We were also supplied lunch by the tour guide and local. We had a great experience learning about the area and how the Lagoon mouth to the sea can keep changing.

From this point, the walk to the trig gradually gets steeper as you climb towards the top. It will take about 15 minutes of steep walking to get to the top. Halfway you can take a nice break to admire the beach views through the trees. At the summit there are panoramic views and information signs about the lagoon, wildlife and the Southern Alps. There is a good place to sit and relax before heading down.On the way back it is mostly downhill, so it will take less time to return, around 35 minutes.Total trip is around 1.5 hrs.It is one of the best things to do in Okarito and was well worth a trip from Franz Josef to do this walk. There is free drinking water, toilets and parking at the car park at the start of the walk.

Okarito Trig Walk
We were greeted by a wagtail that was not shy at all. Next was a Tui on a branch that sang for us several times. It was like being Cinderella with these birds singing for us. The hike was picturesque with the winding wooden path on the plains then mostly pebbly track that could get steep at certain areas. We found it to be a great walk - 1.5 hours one way on a leisurely pace but faster coming down.

Well worth the climb, which I'd a bit steep in places. Spectacular fungi and bird life.

Okarito Trig Walk
The dramatic-looking part of this walk in a lot of pictures, with the wooden walkway in the wetlands, is just a few minutes from the parking lot!We didn’t have time for a long walk, but really wanted to see that wetlands walkway area, so we were pleasantly surprised to get there pretty quickly after setting off. As usual, bring insect repellent to stay safe from the sand flies.
