Robert Falcon Scott Memorial,
An interesting monument to see in the town centre is the marble statue of Antarctic Explorer Capt. Robert Falcon Scott, who perished along with his team on their return from the South Pole in 1912. The monument is situated near the Avon River and the Oxford Terrace.Here you find a figure of Scott in polar exploration gear, holding a staff and staring forward. The statue stands upon a tall stone pedestal with inscription of one of the last entries from Scott's diary.Recently restored after suffering heavy damage from the 2011 earthquakes, the Robert Falcon Scott statue is a good monument to see when sightseeing in the area.

Definitely a must see in Christchurch. Robert Scott's wife created 2 of these statues...one stayed in the UK and one came to Christchurch. You can see her name carved in the base on one side.

We as a civilization need more statues of Explorers and those who increased understanding of the World and all those who inhabit it. Unfortunately the trend around the World is to tear down statues of past figures who were a product of their time because of outmoded beliefs. So enjoy this statue of a brave individual and hope that the only thing that eventually brings it down is an act of nature.
