North Wind Lodge Backpacker - BBH

Had such a nice stay, this place is more like a nice farmhouse air bnb than a typical hostel. It was so clean, and felt very safe, cosey and homey. The host is super cool and friendly and there are also some friendly furry friends as well (out of the way if you don’t like animals as much)

THE COZIEST SLEEP IVE EVER HAD! we were only there for a night but it was great. Fully stocked kitchen and in a very beautiful area where at night you can see every start in the sky. You should stay here! The people running this place are very helpful and welcoming :)

Having travelled through NZ and stayed in a number of other hostels we feel that the Lodge is providing really good service as a backpackers. Our double room and the facilities were spotless clean and there was even a complete set of towels provided to each guest. The kitchen is equipped perfectly as well.The location of the lodge is pretty ideal if you’re travelling by car and want to see Cape Reinga, but you can also simply enjoy the surrounding remote and beautiful beaches or unwind in the tranquility of the place.
To us, this place has a lot of character and it felt like staying at a friends place, thanks to Karyn and Dool, who are really lovely and caring hosts!

We have never had such a nice, large and bright double room (#5). Fly screens in front of each window, a clean large bathroom, a big garden. Every morning fresh eggs from own chickens (50 ct each)! We were excited! Very nice hosts - thanks Karyn and Dool!

Really enjoyed my stay at thiswonderful spot, a nice big villa, great informative hosts, loads of space inside and outside, a lovely very easy going walk to Red Beach and Henderson Bay.Great location!Would highly recommend!

Incredible hostel, we only stayed one night on our way to Cape Reinga .Nice and friendly place, you got everything that you need. I would recommend this place

It's a great backpacker hostel. Owners are very friendly and personable. Nice showers, great rooms, nice cooking facilities. The environment feels very Australian up in the subtropical far north. Good price too. Note that if you want to explore Cape Reinga, it's a 100km drive.

Based on our experience, staying in the more expensive twin room with en-suite we can only comment and develop an opinion relevant to our situation and the associated common areas we used.The lodge was two stories and we stayed on the first floor (room no. 2). Our room was dusty, the bedding appeared to be dirty, there were squashed bugs on the wall and dead flies on the floor. My boyfriend and his friend got very sick after leaving the accommodation. Also I had an immediate reaction (sneezing and runny nose) I suspect from the dust in our room.However, to our surprise, our bathroom and the shared kitchen were clean and well presented.A potentially serious hazard that arose was in the use of the gas stove. It was a 12 (approximately) burner and an element on the left front side was apparently faulty (unbeknown to us) so when used caused the gas to continue running even after the knob appeared to show it was off and the flame had extinguished.

Great peaceful location and comfortable rooms. WiFi was out whilst I was there, but it's a rural part of New Zealand and technical problems are to be expected. Hosts are friendly people who obviously care about what they are doing. Good location not too far from Cape Reinga and 90 mile beach. Recommended.

Amazing!! The guys are really friendly, super helpful and lovely!I pretty much had the house for myself, super clean, a lot to see around, great location and facilities. I’d super recommend for anyone exploring the far north of New Zealand.
