Great challenging hike, very steep in parts and also abit of a goat track. The view at the top isn't the best but great track for your fitness

ONE OF THE WORST HIKES EVERThe hike is quite challenging, I would it recommend only for fit people and good resistance, not for kids or elderly people.Let’s start by saying that the shield says the way to the summit is 1,5 hour, which is true if you are really good and never taking a break, otherwise it would take you 2/2 and a half hours. The track was all muddy, full of branches and sometimes not clear to follow, the orange stripes on the trees were missing in some spots and you had to totally guess where to go.The first part is quite nice, you have some nice trees and some signs explaining the birds that lives there and a nice river to refresh yourself. After that it gets steep as hell, you need very good climbing shoes and be careful if it’s muddy you going to risk to fall down and get yourself hurt. But all of that was quite fun and adventurous for us, because we like those kind of challenges. But in the end it got really worse: what I usually expect from a hike is that in the end, at the top, I get my “reward” which is a nice lookout or panorama to enjoy and recognise that the hard climb was worth it. Well you get at the very top, the antenna, and you see nothing. All is covered by high trees and you barely see anything. The pictures of the lookout that people post here on google are made in a very small spot you can find on the way back. But this was not the worst. After we decided to keep going and descend from the other side (towards matakana) and the track was as well bad as the previous one. After 4 long exhausting hours, with no more water and food, we ended up on a road between matakana and whangaripo, and that forced us to hitchhike all the way back to our car, and it took us another 1 and a half hour. Definitely not worth. NOT RECOMMENDED

Nice easy drive from Auckland. It's a steady climb up, sometimes steep, sometimes challenging but quite pleasant.Don't expect any amazing views at the summit. There's trees all around but there is a peek out over the farm land. Its an easy 90 minutes one way.

I wasn’t a big fan of this hike. The trail is mostly roots so you have to be very careful walking, and you only get a few good views along the way. If you are into bush hikes, this is probably great for that. Lots of informational signs along the trail (about native plants and animals) which others might enjoy as well. It is a great workout though, as the incline is very steep. If you go a little further than the summit (5 min walk), you reach a viewpoint of the quarry below, which is pretty neat.

Definitely recommend this trail for a day hike. Just plan your walk well, meaning if you don't like backtracking down the same route you went up, it's a long round trip from top of Pakiri hill down through Leigh then Whangateau etc to get back to carpark
