Early Saturday morning mission on a damp Autumn day. Sounds fun. Not with empty bellies. The lure of a good gift shop was too much for me to hang on til Whakatāne so The Red Barn won.Except the gift shop doesn’t open until 10 so don’t fall in to that trap.Sadly there is zero ambience at The Red Barn. It would really benefit from something to cheer it up. Some colour, some soft furnishings, some warmth. Something. Anything. All of the windows were open and it did nothing but accentuate the cold. The staff were all young. They were pleasant enough but not yet skilled in the art of pretending you’re happy to be at work. Another 30 years and they’ll have nailed it like the best of us. Perhaps they were cold too?The Favourite Husband was happy with his big breakfast and the sausages were a really pleasant flavour. The sad garnish sprinkle was wilted, old and unnecessary - a little like my ex.My bacon eggs benny was nice. The hollandaise was an alarming fluorescent yellow but tasted ok. The creamy mushrooms on the side were cold and kind of slopped on like an after thought, but tasted pleasant enough. The coffee was good and that’s a win.Not bad value for money which currently is a plus. I guess the theme here is warmth. The room, the mushrooms and the staff.

Stopped in for lunch earlier this week. The corned beef roll I had from the cabinet wasn't very fresh, the bun was definitely not fresh! The bowl of chips I had was great, skin on potatoes and the aioli was excellent.Nice outdoor seating area with chickens roaming around, fed them some chips since the portion size was quite large! It would be nice to see some salads and or low carb options in the cabinet! If you guys did a nice salad I'd come in every day :)

Cant who believe how rude the boss of the red barn was to my partner and her family today the polite thing to do is not yell at people about feeding the chickens that apparently attack children there for you probably shouldn’t have chickens there if they attack children !!!!!Next time maybe go up to the table and ask politely next time and you won’t lose customers will be telling people not to go there from now on good job dude you’re running you’re business great

Not my first time at the Red Barn, always wonderful food, very delicious, and the atmosphere is great to enjoy a nice pie with your son (as I did) our server Dylan was such a kind young man, and made us feel very welcome, will be coming back soon.

Really nice place to stop. Live free range hens welcome you. Had a tasty chicken wrap with salad in the outdoor garden setting. Quirky gift shop where I found some treasures.

Owner needs a cuddle…..or something. Rude doesn’t cover it. Yelling at customers from a doorway in front of the whole place for doing something seemingly innocent like feeding the free range chickens was way over the top! There was NO friendly warning. There was NO indication we were doing anything wrong AT ALL until a person that we didn’t know yelled “DONT FEED THE ANIMALS” repeatedly. So many ways he could’ve handled the situation and he picked that one. If the chickens attack children, perhaps some signage could help…..or maybe don’t have chickens in the courtyard?? Failing that, how about approach the customer and politely explain instead of the rudeness we endured. Thanks for ruining my mothers birthday brunch. The person “Ants” said he was the owner and was talked to with the same respect and kindness that we were given. If you don’t like being confronted about yelling at people who help pay your bills then perhaps have a think about the way you conduct yourself in the future.10/10 won’t be going back there again.
