Horseshoe Lake Reserve
We were unable to follow the path from New Brighton Road, due to soggy and overgrown conditions, but it lead to us exploring the Burwood Red Zone, directly west of there. It is notable for what is not there. It was a community full of houses, most of which were destroyed or damaged by the 2011 earthquake, and almost completely cleared of all traces it was ever such. All that is left are the remains of gardens: roses, hydrangeas, palms, and the odd electrical hookup box along the abandoned streets. Haunting to visit for those with imagination.

Quite an attractive side river area off the Avon River.Usually lots of ducks. Quite a variety of different breeds. A number of geese, usually in a different area, with a few swans. At the moment there is a pair of Black Swans with some older Cygnets. Most of the birds gather around a very small pier during the day hoping for people to feed them. There are public toilets off the end of River Rd.Be careful not to feed much bread as it can be detrimental to the health of the birds.Wheat, is probably a better option. Try throwing it on the platform. Some of the birds will eat other foods. e.g. diced, half cooked potatoes, carrots. Lettuce is also ok for some. It's a lovely place in summer. Not too bad in winter. Lots of trees and an embankment to sit and watch. A couple of garden seats not far from the public toilets.Personally I love going there.
