Lake Tekapo Budget Accommodation

It's definitely one of the underrated budget accommodation. Dorm room is spacious and clean. No lockers are provided however not a big issue. Kitchen is well equipped although not huge. Bathrooms and toilets are clean. Very close to the lakeside and foursquare.

I like it her. The rooms are big and comfy, there's a kitchen/common area that is nice, the cost is more than reasonable. I had zero issues with staff. Well worth it in my opinion if you're wanting to stay for cheap in lake tekapo.

My husband and I really enjoyed this hostel. It was clean with comfortable beds. There were plenty of toilets and showers so the wait was never long. The lake is absolutely breathtaking! It is a must see. We stayed for 2 nights, but one would have been enough to see the sights of you are in a rush (personally I could stare at the lake for days and still be amazed). If you are able to bring your own food here I would do so. The only grocery store nearby is expensive and there aren’t others within walking distance.

I stayed at one of the 6 bed dorms. Very comfortable and warm rooms, quiet place so I had a really good rest. The kitchen is not big but found it well equipped. Everything was very clean. Was a good experience and would stay again.

Other guests were generally respectful during normal sleeping hours. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Rooms, bathrooms, and kitchen were kept well in order and cleaned regularly. Overall, a pleasant and affordable stay.

TLDR;Facilities - standard, practical, clean.Management - unwelcoming, unfriendly, unreasonable, greedy.We stayed at this accommodation for as 3 people. One of our friends joined us for a few hours in the evening and 1 hour in the morning - and for this privelege the owner demanded a full night's fee!We are very mild mannered guests. To recount our evening's activitie: we played a game of Scrabble in the hostel, cooked dinner and made friends with a Japanese family who were staying at the hostel, chatted quietly for a few hours (we are very aware and respectful of others guests) and left in the early evening to go on a stargazing adventure in Tekapo's wonderful dark night sky reserve.In the morning we awoke at 6am to meet our friend who reconvened with us in the hostel kitchen, a natural meeting point. As we are preparing to leave, the owner comes in and DEMANDS a full nights fee from our friend, $35.We tried to be understanding and meet in the middle, offering him $20 for our friend's use of services (still too much, he used a few tea bags and a few hours chair space). This was unacceptable to him, he would not reach a fair, mutual agreement with us and even threatened to call the authorities. If we had been drinking or partying the night before I might understand, but frankly we had been perfectly reasonable.This is no way to treat guests and run a business. The management are clearly a bitter, money hungry couple. I am absolutely appalled at the treatment we've received. Please spend your hard-earned money on any other accommodation inTekapo, don't give any more business to these greedy owners.Thank you,Martin.

The worst place I‘ve ever stayed at. They only care about your money. We were a group of 4 people but they only had 3 spaces so they made us pay full fee for our friend who visited for a couple of hours in the evening and morning. All the time we spent inside the hostel was chatting quietly, ensuring we didn’t disturb any other guests.We tried to agree on a fair price (20$ instead of 35$) for used facilities but they were absolutely unwilling to come to a fair, mutual agreement which both sides could respect.Also the treatment of us and of our friend due to this was unbearable and devoid of any respect.I‘d rather sleep under a bridge next time than giving these unfriendly people any more money.

The staff and owners here are the best I have seen across all hostels I’ve been at. I was quite sick when I arrived there and they helped take care of me. Seriously the couple who own this hostel are incredibly kind people, they are not the same as the owners from previous reviewers.The hostel itself had great staff while I was there and it’s located very close to some good cafes, Asian restaurants, local foursquare grocery store, and the Good Shepherd church by the lake.
