Went for a visit with my parents. We absolutely loved it. Amazing view of the mighty Rangitīkei river. A secret world down by the river. The boulders were an incredible destination accompanied by some fantail friends. A slice of our historic past.Found this walk by chance on google maps but it was one of the highlights of our weekend in the district.

This is by far the best boulders I've seen in NZ, worth the walk to get there. Also, thank you for providing the flush toilet. Table and chairs is a great place for a picnic.

We wanted to break up the drive from Wellington to Rotorua, and this was a great way to do it! Well worth the detour (roughly 20 minutes off SH1). Steep-ish climb back up the farm track, we took just under two hours return with lots of mucking around at the boulders. Great bird life also (kingfisher, fantails, yellow hammer, green finch, gold finch). Hiking boots were nice, but not essential. Don't take a caravan in, or a lowered vehicle and you'll be fine, as its mostly gravel and access can be steep. $5PP honesty box and a visitor book at the car park. Flushing toilet down the bottom!

An amazing treasure. You need to do this. There's a fairly steep walk down to the Boulders after walking through farm land and of course the same steep walk up on the return. But it's all really worth it. Picnic tables and flushing toilets at the site. A million dollar experience for the $5.00 entry fee. A must do. About 40mins walk in and again to walk out.

Although reasonably easy to find, the last 8 km or so is on narrow gravel road. Take your time and enjoy the scenery. The walk itself is all downhill, about 30-45 mins. You'll be climbing that on the way back, so don't go on the hottest day of the year! The boulders themselves are in a lovely little bit of forest. Near the start is a nice flushing toilet, and if you follow the path, it leads to the boulders and a great little seating area where your can eat you picnic.

Great rock formations in a peaceful forest. There is a sign with a little bit of info about how these 'concretions' form. Unique thing to do. The access road is a long gravel/dirt track, steep at places, not best suited to a city car. Then a 3k walk each way to the site through farmland and down/up a steep hill. Bit of an adventure off the beaten track.

Visiting this place makes me feel like I'm in an enchanting garden. However, please note that access is through private property and a small parking fee is required.

Cool spot. Cost is $5 pp with under 12s free, on an honesty system. A bit slippery the day after rain so wear tramping boots, but I managed in running shoes. After parking, it's a walk across a paddock, then down a gravel farm track to another paddock by the river, then the boulders are in the bush. A toilet with paper and a basin justifies the small expense in itself. I had two 4 year olds who managed the descent and ascent with no real issues but there are two numbers you can call if needed.

Amazing place magical in the bush. Felt very safe for a solo travellerWill recommend to others. The walk is not that steep it's expected for farmlands. Don't let the easy walk down and up put you off. Its easy!$5 per adult put into honesty box (please pay to help the family who own the land) and about 2 hour return walk to the boulders

Well, I discovered these on a map 5 yrs ago, but found they had a substantial steep walk down to them. After Covid rules forbade visiting, I decided after 2 yrs of lockup, we would take the first opportunity to venture down there. On the 27th December, 2021, we pack a small picnic lunch & drinks, & so to Ohingaiti we go. After a 1hr drive, found the turnoff just north of the town, off SH1, then left onto PEKA RD, which is a Grade 1 gravel road in good condition.Well -adventure, daring, intrepid, absolutely does describe it succinctly ! For 2 , overweight, relatively unfit 70+ yr olds, it became a life threatening challenge !From the recommended carpark, off PEKA Rd, & DONATION ? box ($5/ea.) It is a walk across flat farmland, through gates, then down a 30-40* sloped gravel road cut into the hillside to the river level. I guess it is a 100-150m drop in a distance of about 2.5Km.Took about 25 mins. Hard on the knees & it was also a 24* day, but cloudy overhead. We took it slowly in about 100m tranches, had a rest, then plodded on . When we reached the river flats it was a 500m flat walk to the hidden valley where the boulders hide away in a LOST WORLD of their own ! ABSOLUTELY MAGICAL & ETHEREAL ! There is a good DOC ?, explanation board ,with phone numbers, if you have a problem getting back. BUT NOT AT THE START !!! WE were passed by a 4WD SUV when going down. Not sure if permission was granted by landowner, which id necessary as the land is a working farm.We had a sandwich lunch with us which was able to be enjoyed at a TABLE & Chairs amongst the geological splendour of this ancient geomorphic wonderland ! A swim is easily possible if you are inclined, and toilets are provided by the picnic table at the first gateway at the Boulder Park entrance at Rangitikei River level. Truly worth the effort !However, but , and anyhow , you now have to drag your hurting, but refreshed body back up a steep climb to your vehicle ! That is the rub, Again we took it slowly, and the return took about 40min at a snails pace !BUT WORTH EVERY ACHE & 2 DAYS OF PAIN ! See my photos also. Give it a go, and enjoy the solace & wonder of how these natural entities formed some 700, 000 years ago ! !
