The Alpine Chalets
The past 3 days that I spent here were truly magical! The room was amazing, it felt like I was home!It was tidy, smelled really nice and has pretty much everything you need. Not to forget to mention that you will be welcomed by the loveliest hosts, Mary and Steve! They were really kind, friendly, accomodating and professional! In my honest opinion, this place has the best placement in the area as it is very near the petrol station and the supermarket. It also has the BEST VIEW around. I'll make sure to check in here everytime I'm going to Ruapehu. I hope everyone who stays here have the same enchanting experience I had! Once again, thank you Alpine Chalets! Excited to see your future upgrades!

Our first impression of the Alpine Chalets was the very warm welcome we received. Mary was kind to offer us a room further away from the highway to help reduce the potential noise, and knowing that we came from a long day of hiking, Mary already had the heater on ☺️ Room itself was well equipped with microwave, kettle, bar fridge and sink. It was clean and spacious. Location could not be better. Just a minute or two from the warm and bustling tavern and restaurant down the road. Perfect place to rest between our long days of hiking!

Staff was friendly, communicated well and were flexible when I needed to change the booking and arrived late. It's walking distance to several good restaurants. Everything was in good repair and very clean. They had nice linens and hot showers. It's an older hotel, but was a great stay. Don't let that scare you off. I'd definitely stay there again!

The room was not very tidy, cobwebs and spiders in the bathroom, Quite dusty all over the accomodation. The worst part was the smell of mold in the room and bathroom. The bed though, was good and linen clean.

It is a very nice, clean, and spacious room. Late night, when everyone ignored to provide a place to stay, Mary managed to provide us with a lovely room. The room is very comfortable and warm place. Self-contained room with microwave, stove, toaster, fridge. Great price and best service. Highly recommended. We really enjoyed it.

Had a lovely time here, had awesome views of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro from our upstairs room. The beds were very comfy, the heat pump was great, and communication with Mary was very good. Nice quaint accommodation

Great location and great views as well. It's only a 15-minute drive from Mt Ruapehu, near the gas station / mini market, a snow gear rental place and a mini golf.Staff is great but there's no manager on premises, you need to call them by phone. The place itself screams for a renovation, it's old, our unit was unclean (the manager took care of this after complaining with them) and we ran out of hot water twice, so I can't imagine how it can be with full occupancy.I can't recommend this place to anyone because clearly I won't be going for a second time.Location-wise is great, but the building itself, and the cleanliness needs to improve a lot.

The pictures on their site do not accurately represent the poor quality of the establishment. Unpainted plaster repair work, peeling paint, unfinished (but old) paintwork, un-vacuumed (or poorly vacuumed) carpet, and just poor in general. Worst of all, there is no agent of any kind there. The only bright spot was the bar right across the street. We had a lovely meal there. In the end it is a budget bed for hikers, skiers, or bikers. One step up from a tent. We slept well and nothing crawled on us in our sleep (that we know of), and I suppose we got what we paid for, but I wanted to leave a review just so people will not be fooled by the misleading photos.Update: I don’t see it here, but the owner responded to me by saying that he thought it was severe to say that his/her place was only a step up from a tent.Listen, I don’t like giving bad reviews. I loved New Zealand and it’s people, and hope to go back again soon. My primary reason for writing this review was the misleading photos on the site. With just a little TLC this could be a fairly nice if not rustic motel. Finish the wall repairs. Finish painting. Vacuum the floors and the crevices in the sliding door (found a dead moth that took me a second to clean up - why didn’t the room attendant take the time to do that?) Sweep and maybe occasionally repaint the outdoor hallway - it was littered with leaves and other natural debris. My review is well-intentioned: to help visitors make an informed decision about whether to stay there, and to give the owner some feedback to help his/her business. I truly want you to succeed! Just spend a little time on each room, just a little. Attention to details like cleanliness and appeal. You can do it!
