The bronze statue on the quay depicts three 10th-century Polpolynesian explorers, Kupe Raiatea the explorer, his wife Hine-te-aparangi and Pekahourangi the Tohunga at the moment of sighting Aotearoa (New Zealand) from their canoe Matahourua. The Kupe bronze statue group was created in plaster and painted with bronze paint by Trethewey in 1939 for the New Zealand centenary celebrations in 1940 in Rongotai / Wellington. The statue then stood at Wellington Train Station for 40 years and at the Wellington Show and Sports Center for 10 years before being placed as a national treasure at Te Papa, the national museum, in 1997.Donations enabled the bronze statue to be cast and placed on March 4, 2000 at its current location.
