Quarry Car Park - Waitahinga trails

I did the walk from quarry car park to the dam and back. Took me about 3 hours round trip with a quick stop for lunch. Didn’t come across a single person the entire hike, just some deer and goats.The trails are overgrown in several areas and there were spider webs across the trail the ENTIRE time (though that may be seasonal). I didn’t find the trails themselves that scenic but enjoyed the dam at the end.There are trail markings on the trees throughout the entire walk so it’s not hard to follow. Just pay attention otherwise it’s easy to miss one and you’ll have to backtrack your steps to get back on the trail.

Stunning to visit and do the tracks. Took us 4 hours and was very hot. Stunning views over to Ruapehu. A couple of areas needs better signage and is a trek to get out there but the dam makes up for it.

Beautiful walks in native bush. Amazing big old rimu's.

Solid hike. Has the variety of a lot of different trails which range from 2km to 10km. Its a 40 minute drive from wanganui and this was my 4th time doing it but for first timers it's a must do. Classic NZ bush walk and scenery etc and the lookouts are gorgoues on a summer day.

Very beautiful forest walk, fantastic dog friendly trail.Definatley more of a bush walk following trail markers rather than a formed track.So make sure you have good footwear for this trail.

Please note these trails are closed on Tuesday!Wonderful trails, I really enjoy coming here. It is quite rooty and can be slippery in places, so wear appropriate shoes. Wonderful trees and bush, very peaceful. Keep an eye on the markers as there are a couple of places they are easy to miss :)

Great experience walking to the Dam with good trail markers showing the way. The visit to the Dam was well worth it and it is a lovely peaceful area. Credit to the Whanganui Tramping Club for the hard work creating these trails and maintaining them.I look forward to coming back again sometime soon.

Great hiking trail just outside of Kai Iwi. I got to spend the day walking the various paths along the Waitahinga Trails. If you enjoy hiking and don't want something too strenuous, then this is a good option. There are several trails to do. I would definitely recommend walking down to the Waitahinga Dam. The trails are mostly well marked (a few areas were a bit more challenging to navigate due to fallen branches) and generally easy to follow. The chicken run trail has awesome viewpoints for Mount Taranaki and Mount Ruapehu. A fair amount of the road up to the start is dirt track, and there is a small parking area for your car. The trail is closed on Tuesdays, and the whole of July and August.

Off the beaten track. Level 2-3 fitness out of 5. Wear the right footwear. Not suitable for children under the age of 10. Thistles as high as 4 foot tall and the track can be quite dangerous, some parts are narrow and slippery. No public toilet. Had a great day exploring.

First time visit today with my dog. Suitable footwear a must as a lot of tree roots. Weather hot so be prepared with water. We didn't do the walk to dam, as not as fit as I thought!!! Lots of flies/flying bugs which were annoying...
